Six months ago, I took someone's advice and started drinking apple juice spiked with raw, unpasteurized vinegar. Supposed to help your digestion. I got into the taste, so I would have some two or three times a day. Then one night after drinking it, the heartburn hit me so bad that I couldn't put out the fire. I sat up all night long, until 6 a.m., taking Tums, baking soda, and Pepcid (that's all I had, since I had never needed anything before, and the Pepcid was for the dog).
Since that night, I've been fighting constant pain and heartburn. I've tried to take omeprazole, but it makes my stomach hurt even worse, so I would have to skip a day here and there because of the pain. Not taking it was painful, too, though. I've lost 20 lbs. in the six months, putting me at 110. Until last week, I was losing about three lbs. per week and was really starting to worry.
Three weeks ago I had an endoscopy, which revealed inflammation that was keeping the esophageal sphincter from closing. The doc told me to take... ready for this? ...omeprazole. Since that wasn't working for me, he said to try ranitidine (Zantac). For three days it seemed to work, but then I began having doubling-over stomach cramps.
I finally decided it was time to get serious about FIXING the problem, or starve to death (probably with Barrett's and cancer, too). Through a lot of research and reading, I found that there are some natural herbal things that do indeed work.
Licorice Root (preferably DGL to avoid high b.p.)
Since it was 5 a.m., I ran downstairs to make myself a cup of chamomile tea that I knew was in the pantry. But alas, it also had licorice root and lemon grass in it. I drank a very large mug. By 8:30 I was actually hungry and steamed some eggs and potatoes for breakfast (only a tablespoon full). That worked so well, I made some more tea and had another large mug at 11:00. At noon, I was famished and steamed some vegetables. Another cup late in the afternoon, and I was ready to eat again; fish fillet and green beans. That was the first day in six months that I had eaten three meals. I got some slippery elm lozenges that put to rest the slight heartburn I had that night.
I've purchased some DGL licorice lozenges along with the slippery elm that are portable. I also found that aloe juice is good for keeping the heartburn away and along with the licorice, decreases inflammation.
