Im 24 years old, I have been on dexliant for a year, after I had my Barium Test. Before this, I had frequent heartburn, depending on what I ate of course. I did throw up quite often.

After I started taking it, I could eat alot more and actually gained 20-30 pounds, The problem with it is, When I eat meat I get wicked heartburn, that I never did before. And being on the PPI causes heartburn (when they actually do come to be severe where I am in tears and not even tums or anything will touch it. Actually what does make me feel better is Eating a Hot pepper or a swallow of tabasco sauce. that doesn't seem right to me. I can eat spicy things all day and feel great. Tomato sauce and hot dogs, donuts are my worst trigger foods.

I noticed a lot of people on here wanting to get off PPI's is there a main reason for this? I kind of want to due to the weight gain, and the meat thing. I tried Apple cider vinegar today which instantly reduced my heartburn, but an hour later it was burning my molars, with the acid in my throat. (not really burning, but it felt it)

I placed an order for some DGL today, Has anyone tried this? The reviews on the "river" website i bought it on seem to be positive. If anyone can talk to me and help it would be great before I have to go spend boat loads of money on a GI doctor, just to tell me what I already know.

It's good to get off PPIs if you can, because long term use might reduce your calcium uptake among other nutritional issues. You may need to wean off because some people have a bounce back in acid production. Anyway, it sounds like your GERD isn't that well controlled. What does your DR say?

Dr says take PPIs like candy. Pretty much keeps wanting me to increase dosage. and that my weight gain was normal. Yeah thats the last thing i need due to I hate milk and most calcium foods. I rely on a supplement for my calcium. He also wanted me on High blood pressure meds, that I control now fully with coq10, 140/67 to 123 over 70.

Unitednations161, did you know that the fine print/legalese papers inside of a package of Dexilant indicate that it is to be used for 6 months or less? Omeprazole says 14 days. Reading the possible complications and side effects is scary. (You can find it online.) I'm not sure why the GI docs seem oblivious to this, other than big pharma $$$.

I am off PPIs using DGL, slippery elm, chamomile, and sometimes lemon grass. I think it is better to use several things at one time as opposed to DGL alone because they do different things. I couldn't prove it, but it seems like the more constant and continual you can be about using these things, the more they help. For instance, sometimes I think that sipping on my tea for an hour works better than chewing up a DGL licorice lozenge all at one time. I always slowly dissolve a slippery elm lozenge at opposed to chewing it up. This is my experience: www.healingwell.com/community/default.aspx?f=45&m=3144102

You may find that if you start first thing in the morning with the natural products, you may not need your Dexilant. Of course, you might want to leave the hot peppers and Tabasco sauce alone for awhile. smilewinkgrin

I actually stopped my Dexilant cold turkey a few days ago. I have noticed a slight rebound affect, but nothing im not already used to before. ive been really watching what I eat though as well, Little coffee, no onions, no tomato sauce, No donuts or anything "breadish and fried".

I really dont get the hot pepper thing, I love them, (im odd like that) I can sit and eat them like candy and feel great after. If it doesnt bother me, is it harming me? One hot pepper ring during a Severe heart burn attack, takes care of it in seconds. I burp a little then its gone. (not always but 75% of the time)

What about ice cream? After I eat that im bloated and just feel horrible sometimes. not really heartburn, but just "off". But a brick of cheese is fine. This is some confusing stuff.

The reason they have most the limits on drugs like the PPI's is that they are afraid people will self medicate and not see a doctor to see if something more serious may be going on. The have had that two week warning on them for over14 years. Doesn't 't mean there are no side effects, osteo being a main one.

The reason you can eat cheese and not ice cream is there is no lactose in cheese but there is in ice cream and milk. I was wondering the same thing and just read that. I am very lactose intolerant.

Hi

My views on ppi is they should be banned except for those in extreme difficulty, they are not safe for long term use in my opinion too many side effects, even side effects manufacturer does not list, so doctors are oblivious to it.

the reason for peppers is to be excluded for those with gastritis/GERD and acid reflux is that, the reflux acid contains pepper contents/chemicals and imagine breathing in pepper mist or putting pepper into a cut, you will seriously exacerbate you situation. It happened to me before i knew i had gastritis or diagnosed with it, had hot Korean noodle soup and I literally died from breathing issues about 5-10 min after eating them.

The reason ice cream bothers you but cheese does not is because ice cream has much more lactose in it than cheese. Skip the ice cream or take a lactase tablet or two before you eat it and you will feel much better. I'd recommend lactose-free milk for you, too.

I just took some Slippery elm lozenges, and wow, my bloating from eating went away so fast! Not even a touch of heart burn. I also got some "throat coat tea", Which I have some high blood pressure (meaning It fluctuates and I have """white coat syndrome" So ill be careful and watch my BP.

The hot peppers,Im still unsure, it would be like an alcoholic, giving up all drinks in a day. I don't eat them often and not really much spicy food. Just have a few hot peppers every so often. Not a big hot sauce fan, Just jalapeƱos, and Hot pepper rings. If its not a trigger food for me, I don't see the harm? Im not trying to argue, its just a thorn in my side to stop. I have given up my trigger foods though!

Any more insight on the pepper thing would be great!

And thank about the ice cream! i hardly eat it because of the pain. thats fine though, not a big deal! and milk I can't stand anyways.

I had my reflux/hernia repair surgery on 7/7/14. Weight loss is 9 lbs to date. I was told this was normal. Food just doesn't taste the same since the surgery. Last week I started to have severe hunger pains.so I would eat a little to relieve it. Now I am feeling nausea on and off throughout the day. Worse after I eat. Feel pressure in my throat and pressure in my upper abdomen which I feel could be relieved if I could burp. Take Gas X when I need it.
I was on meds for 20 years and was still re fluxing over 200 times a day. I hope I made the right choice having the surgery.
I felt better a week ago than I do now. This concerns me. Started advancing my diet to chop meat and chicken. Maybe I should cut back although the doctor said I could go on a regular diet as long as I take small bites and chew very well.

Unitednations161, I do know what you mean about being a pepper-holic! I'm from the Texas border. For me, eating has become a necessity, because there is no spice in my life anymore! We are opposite on trigger foods. I can eat ice cream just fine.

If the tea has too much licorice root for you (B.P.), then you can break your DGL tablets into pieces and take them more often. That way, you'll get a more constant dose and the DGL will avoid the blood pressure issue.

There is another one that you can try... aloe vera juice. I think the stuff is disgusting by itself, but if you put honey in it, it's not too bad. Honey is good for coating and healing, also. You can get aloe juice at Walmart for $6/gal. in the pharmacy section. Today I'm having worse pain again (wonder what I ate now?), but the aloe juice, did a pretty good job of soothing it.
