I was diagnosed with gastritis and gastric erosion, the start of ulcers and negative for h. pylori bacteria. I"m on protonix 1x per day and carafate 1x per day. I had endoscopy and was in ER 3x for pain. I have read other posts of being in tears, depressed and eating small meals. I have had all those things! My gastro dr said to stop the carafate after 5 weeks, which is this week. I'm really scared the pain will return.

If I eat wrong, fried food, too much food, too many spices, acid, etc, I have bad pain for hours straight thru to my back. How does one know if you are ok to stop taking it. Another endoscopy would make sense, right, but with insurance my cost was over $2,000.

I started eating every 2-3 hours and logging everything to see what does not work. When they say eat small meals, I mean SMALL, I eat 1/2 a small baked potato, 1/2 cup canned pears, 1/2 pasta, 3-4 oz chicken, etc, very small amounts each time. It has been a huge adjustment for me.

Ok, back to my question, is it just trial and error on when to stop carafate? In other words if it hurts again, I must keep taking it?

Really looking forward to see what you all think.

Welcome to the forum Pennstater.

Always follow your doctor's directions. We're not doctors here, just patients like you.

You won't know if the erosion's gone unless you try stopping the med. The protonix should be helping you too by keeping your stomach non-acid, so when there's reflux it doesn't burn the tender tissues of the esophagus.

That price for the endo is ridiculous! Did you check that you weren't overbilled? You may need some further testing. Better investigate the cost before getting it.

I'm glad you are keeping a food log. Keep on with it. It takes months to find if you can identify food triggers.

Pennstater, have you tried herbal? I was in terrible pain, partially made worse by the PPI's. I was nauseous all the time. Even the little meals (smaller than you describe: two bites of boiled fish, 1/2 small potato, never a spice) would make me feel just terrible. One night I was up all but an hour or two, reading for something that I could do differently. I finally found it! Licorice root and slippery elm. It started working within an hour or two. The same day, I had three meals and wasn't in the terrible pain anymore! I haven't taken a PPI or antacid since. I feel so good now that sometimes I'm pushing it. I started eating applesauce yesterday, which gave me some heartburn last night. I had to take two licorice root tablets before I went to bed, but that took care of it and I was able to sleep laying flat. Give it a try!
