Today marks the one year anniversary of my Nissen surgery. I'm so glad that I had the procedure. My life has changed significantly-- for the better. I can eat what I want. I am free of heartburn and reflux. The recovery presented some challenges, but through patience and endurance I trudged through the process. My reflux was severe. I routinely aspirated acid content into my trachea. I was in the emergency 4 times during my last year pre-surgery.

As this was my first surgery, I have to admit that I was terrified. Waking-up from anesthesia was a miserable experience. The first 72 hours were difficult. I had a lot of post-operative pain. Every time I took a breath, I could feel pain where the surgeon had repaired the hernia in the diaphragm. I had to learn to swallow again-- very frustrating. But all of this was short-lived. In a few months I was eating a fairly regular diet. Over time the swallowing improved.

I have a couple of long-term effects from my surgery. For some reason, hunger pains are much more pronounced. I become full much more quickly. I get the occasional hiccup spasm-- this is brief and short-lived.

Overall, the surgery was a blessing. I wasted many years looking for a miracle cure or minimally invasive procedure that didn't involve restructuring my stomach and LES. If your life is miserable because of reflux-- have the surgery, because a year later you won't believe how your life will change.

Good luck to all--

Congratulations, and thanks for posting!

Like you, I had big problems, and often would wake up aspirating acid, literally choking. I just hit two weeks since my nissen, and I'm already very glad I had it done!
