I'm very new to the board and posted about Pylori and my visit to the GI doc a couple of days ago... didn't get much in the way of response.
I'm baffled.  I never considered myself to have any kind of upper GI problem... no food regurgitation, no chest pain i.e. 'heartburn'.  I just have this feeling of something being caught in my throat.  I also become violently ill with pain if I eat broccoli and I get the hiccups if I eat bread.  Is this part of the bread debate?  I have to repeatedly swallow to get food down... it partially goes down with the first swallow but I have to keep at it.  I am in no pain whatsoever upper GI, but I do have painful BMs during menstuation.  I have no issues w/constipation.  I'm extremely regular.  Is this too much info?  I'm very fit... I'm a recreational runner.  5'2" 108lbs.  42yrs old.  I do eat more carbs than anything else, I'm sure.  And I love chocolate and have a little of it a time or 2 (or 3) a week.
When I tell my doctors... I'm on my third... about the bread thing they say they have "no idea" what that could be.  I live in a major metropolitan area with a world renowned hospital... I'm saying that we have really good medical care and docs in the area.  I'm at a loss.
Read my Pylori post if you're interested so I don't have to repeat what I've done to date.  I have an appt this coming Tues for a swallowing xray (I forget the med jargon) and I'm scheduled for endoscopy later in the month.  Do I really just have reflux/GERD?  I'm not trying to minimize the condition, but my GI gave me a laundry list of possibilities including Lou Gehrig's disease (ALS).
But he really thinks I have some sort of stricture or something caused by years of reflux.  Can anyone else relate to my specifics?  I think I need an education in GERD/reflux.

It sounds like a food allergy
or maybe some kind of spasming
going. on. And it seems odd
you could have had "years" of
acid reflux and not known it?

Yes, this GERD business is everywhere
and can be confusing. I think it all
boils down to digestion and getting
that food out of your stomach and
where it needs to be to deliver the nutrients.

But yours sounds almost like
a panic thing going on.

Hiccups is a spasming of the diaphragm
and eating dry bread is actually
thought to be a CURE so that's baffling.

If this were me, I would begin
a magnesium supplement (not alone
but a mineral supplement with magnesium
as the main mineral. IT will help
any spasms you could have going on.

The broccoli pain makes me think
you have increased gas, so does the hiccups,
as if too much air is getting into your
system while you are eating. Do you eat
very quickly?

Again, if this were me, I would
start with aiding the digestion
and take some magnesium to relax
whatever spasms may be going on.
At least until you can get a proper
diagnosis. I can imagine this must
be very frustrating.

I'll read up on magnesium... thanks.  I have no known food allergies.  This started w/an on again off again feeling in the throat sometime in 1998.  I had it looked at then but docs couldn't find anything so I just let it go.  Has gradually worsened thru the years and the swallowing is such an aggravation so I decided to try again for a diagnosis.  Yes, it's frustrating, but I'm not in any pain, so I suppose I'll just wait it out with these tests.
