Had endoscopy done last week....results are as follows:

Z-line irregular....biopsied.
Ectopic gastric mucosa in upper third esophagus.
Erythematous mucosa in antrum, prepyloric region and pulleys....biopsies.
Single gastric polyp. Retrieved
Erythematous duodenopathy.

My daughter was told I had possbile Barretts and gastritis. I see doc on the 11th. I went from 105 lbs in May to now floating between 86 and 90 lbs!!! I don't know how to gain my weight back. I've been taking Zantac, carafate, and maalox off and on since June....didn't like side effects of prilosec and nexium....pepcid made me dizzy. Zantac helps some but afraid to take two a day so I'm just taking one and maalox at bedtime as needed. Having more stomach pains etc today than normal....I only do carafate when I feel I need to cuz of constipation and headache. I'm miserable trying to keep eating the same everyday.

I eat canned or boiled/baked chicken....oatmeal every morning and evening with half a banana, sometimes with raisins, rice cereal with 1 or 2 % milk, cooked carrots, green beans, baked or mashed potatoes.....3-4 graham crackers a day dipped in milk as snack. A piece of white bread toast every now and then....sometimes cantelope or whole grain roll at work.

Is there anything here I should be eating or not eating??? My weight is depressinge along with this reflux and gastritis plus causing me anxiety....Im tired and can barely work.....I'm almost willing to beg to have a feeding tube put in cuz I am tired of how i look and feel.....I feel anorexic and malnourished. Other doc thinks I should start the paxil he prescribed becuz I'm also going thru perimenopause. I'm 46. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!!!!

Thought maybe these problems could be due to hormones, possbily thyroid.....post thyroidectomy 5 yrs ago....went hyper in Feb but dosage was changed at that time.....also took 3 pills of cipro in begin of march for uti and started having anxietyand panic aattacks for it....I keep thinking maybe it caused it.

You really don't want a feeding tube. They're nasty! There's lots of things to try before going that route.

So, you've got redness and irritation in your esophagus and the entrance to the stomach. Was there anything more said about the stomach? I'm guessing that was where the polyp was found and removed. The exit from the stomach was also red. No ulcers? No hiatal hernia? No loose valve or strictures?

There are other PPIs you could try, also you might think about reducing the dose of the ones you have tried if the side effects weren't horrible. I'd also consider 2 Zantac. It beats a feeding tube!

I'd avoid the canned chicken or at least be really careful about reading the label for additives. Is there any possibility you are lactose intolerant? That causes loads of gas and can make you feel bad. Since you are losing weight, I'd up the milk to whole milk, including if it has to be lactose-free. Your diet is fat-free now! Lamb is supposed to be hypoallergenic. How about some fish, even if you have to eat out. I dislike the smell of cooking fish but I will eat it. No canned or boxed mashed potatoes!! Preservatives! Only fresh potatoes.

How about trying rice instead of wheat for a while? I recently did a wheat challenge and have to limit my intake to 1 slice a week of regular bread. I do better with home-made bread because store bread is full of preservatives, the reason it can sit on the counter for 2 weeks. You can do all sorts of things with rice and there are many varieties.

Constipation - my solution is a dose of Miralax, generic, and a tsp of Benefiber, also generic. It all dissolves in my morning coffee with no taste, taken an hour after my pills.

How about some puddings or those breakfast or nutrition drinks? I don't tolerate them because of lactose and corn syrup, but they're worth a try. Gelatin is a great source of protein. Do you eat nuts? Peanut butter or almond butter?

If you are having reflux/refluxing happening after eating, it can be because of food intolerances. Keep a food journal with dates, times, foods, drinks, medicines, reactions. My allergist helped me find my reflux triggers that way. Lots of threads - see the search box at the top of the page. It will help you keep track or calories too.

I hate it when docs want to put women on psych meds because they are menopausal and the docs have no clue what the problem is. Maybe some need them, but for me, I want answers to my physical ailments first.

Thank u so much!!! Haven't been told about strictures or weak les.....I follow up in the 11th to find out everything. The acid reflux I have is not heartburn......I just hurt in my chest, somwtimes back, and of course throat, etc!!! I'm thinking silent or lpr.....I was diagnosed 3 yrs ago mild gastritis and non-erosive reflux....never bothered me much...just felt like phlem in throat here and there until this past May and its been pretty much non-stop. I'm ok maybe the first hour or two when I get up every morning.....worse in afternoon and evening.....sleeping not too bad....i use 3 pillows. But several nites before bed I use maalox. Maalox and zantac since June!!

Never had any food intolerances that I know of.....have always eaten anything. Can I request a test for allergies?? And of course I feel worse when I'm anxious etc. I'm afraid of trying new foods cuz I'm just so down and out and weak. Never dreamed I would have issues with eating!!!
I do check labels when shopping.....would luv to have pudding etc but even regular plain yogurt caused the acid. I'm limited on money so I eat what I can afford.

I have maybe 2 to 3 good days a week. Can gastitis make the acid reflux worse??? I just hate that sometimes I just feel weird....I get palps and head pressure sometimes......and sometimes I feel weak and sleepy after I eat???

PS.....I do eat almonds....a few daily....tried peanut butter awhile back and it bothered me.....haven't tried almond butter yet....I only eat fresh potatoes but they bother me sometimes....just the Russet....haven't tried red ones yet. I dont eat bread much at all.....a piece every now and then....afraid to try nutrition drinks.....I avoid anything with acids in them....I dont take any vitamins cuz ibdont don't if its possible.....or how I can fit it in with the meds....3-4 hours away from thyroid med.....plus carafate, zantac, maalox. Can't wait to see Dr to find out everything and where to go from here. I may need to find a more suitable job too.....I'm a cook for an elementary school and I'm on my feet all day except for my 30 minute lunch!!

I think my gastritis started after the reflux cuz I wasn't having any stomach pains until sometime in June.....only recently feeling it more a few weeks ago. Hiatal hernia, weak valve, strictures not mentioned....nurse told my daughter possible Barretts.....don't know where polyp was found...follow up in a week to await biopsy results. I even burp/belch water sometimes.....can have acid reflux even if I eat the same thing everyday. But everyday morning and evening I eat plain oatmeal with half a banana in it.....sometimes I put a few plain raisins in it. I do have at least 1-1 1/2 banana everyday.....sometimes a few apple slices.....a few grapes at work a couple of times a week.

Is any kind of plain pasta ok.....I ate spaghetti noodles with cooked carrots the other day and do have some rotini noodles on hand.....does whole grain matter???
Sorry I keep posting.....I'm on my phone typing this.

I'll stop you right there, the good news is your diet is FULL of bad foods that will be making your gastritis worse! So with some changes you should feel a lot better. I'm unfortunately a bit of a gastritis expert through experience, and insoluble fibre is one of the biggest irritants, even more than fat in my experience. Fibre clumps together and will keep your stomach churning, trying to digest them because it senses big particles of food. It doesn't realise it cant digest them.

So Oatmeal - raisins - bananas - cereal - crackers - toast - raw fruit/veg - get rid of it all. Stick to low fibre foods like potatoes, rice,(very) well cooked vegetables, chicken, fish, milk is ok if you can tolerate it.

Add in some sugar if you're low on calories, I use pure glucose as opposed to table sugar as its easier to digest (doesnt actually need any digestion) and doesn't taste as sweet. Plus some people cant absorb fructose which can lead to other digestive discomfort. If desperate just dissolve as much sugar as u can in 200ml of warm water and down it, i too have lost far too much weight from gastritis so know how desperately you can need the calories!

Also avoid any 'rough' foods like toast and crackers, stick to soft foods, soup is ideal, slow cook some potatoes, chicken and a bit of veg (not onions or anything of that family) in a broth and have that, you should hopefully have no stomach issues with it.

Also drink regular sips of water after meals, I find this may be a little irritating at first if you drink a bit too much, but after a few days you should feel much better - it keeps the stomach more diluted hence less acidic.

Gastritis is REALLY tough to beat, I can't imagine how I could do it without PPIs so I feel for you. If possible try a different type, the two you have tried both have the same active compound, there are three different ones that may not have the same side effects - lansoprazole, pantoprazole and rabeprazole.

Also get on amazon and buy PepzinGI and DGLicorice. Suck a DGL 20-30 mins before each meal, and take the PepzinGI immediately after breakfast and evening meal. These are non-drug supplements that I've tried and seem to help. Not a miracle cure but every little helps.

Thank u Andy.....I've been living on this diet since June!!! Tummy wasn't hurting until end of July/beginning of August.....the pains haven't been too horrible yet.....the acid reflux is what bothers me the most!!!

I usually don't do raw veggies.....just eating cooked carrots, green beans, a little broccoli some times....mostly bananas but do eat some cantelope or few grapes at work....sometimes a couple of slices of apple for reflux (peeled)....I do eat a few raw almonds daily.....baked or mashed potatoes (no skin) plain......I eat everything plain.....I usually eat rice krispies or rice chex after they get soft.....2% or 1% milk only.....but only about a cup or so a day.....a few graham crackers dip in milk to soften them.....rice cakes softened.

I read where oatmeal was ok.....its been good for the reflux.....but I rarely eat bread.....sometimes rice.......just bought some whole grain brown rice.

Are whole grains better.....do u know???? What about avacados.....I need the calories!!!

This diet is horrible.....I have no clue how I'm gonna gain my weight back!!! Can't get in enough calories like this!!!! My weight is fluctuating between 87-90lbs!
Hard to know what eat with gastritis and acid reflux!

I don't like the Zantac.....sometimes it makes me feel weird and anxious....and makes my throat hurt some times......I do the carafate when needed.....gives me headache and constipation....maalox makes me feel weird at times but maybe its when the vagus nerve is more irritated??? I may try taking a smaller does of Prilosec....the 20 mg made me week, shakey, anxious, and almost faint.....maybe a 10 mg dose a day....I'm a mess and so weak and tired from all of this!!

Do you take things like Tums or Gaviscon? They're no where near as effective as medication but much better than nothing!

I know all too well how hard it is to gain weight, my own weight has just dropped below 150lbs for the first time, and I'm a 6 foot 6 man! I eat mostly boiled potatoes, fish and a little veg, almost impossible to not lose weight without eating obscene portions which only worsens stomach pain.

I think at some point the body just has to start shutting down and slowing the metabolism to stop weight loss, I mean its not like we're starving just not eating as much as usual. I'm sure my gf eats less than me because she's trying to lose weight, yet she doesn't and I do!

I havent chewed tums in quite awhile.....and I've never tried gaviscon.....just maalox at night several nights a week and zantac once daily.....supposed to take two daily but I haven't done that yet cuz it makes me kinda weak and I'm already weak!!! Its getting where its not helping as much now :( I get so afraid to take anything....I know the Prilosec works better so I may try to do 10 mg.....the 20 made me feel weak, shaky, jittery, and almost kinda faint feeling.....Nexium gave me muscle twitches. Supposed to take carafate everday day up to 4 times but it constipates me.....I've gotta get something done cuz I'm miserable at times.
Depresses me cuz it seems I can't eat anything I used to.....would luv a burger or enchiladas, etc....would luv a sprite!!!
I keep thinking maybe cuz its cuz I'm going thru the hormone changes and my thyroid med was adjusted almost two months before my acid reflux got bad.
Before May, I never had any problems.....just every now I would feel something in my throat! I was diagnosed with very mild gastritis and non-erosive reflux about 3 yrs ago but never had hardly any problems with it til now.
I also took those 3 Cipro pills back in early March....third pill sent me into anxiety and panic attacks......had anxiety yrs back but never like these were!!! I even got admitted over night for observation and had ultrasound done of my heart.....it was horrible!!!!
Anyhow I keep thinking one of these things just got it going or perhaps weakened the LES.....but I do feel I have LPR becuz I don't get heartburn! Wish it was just heartburn.....would be so much easier to know what to avoid eating!!
Its even harder now with reflux and gastritis.....doesn't leave me many options.
I see the gastro Dr tomorrow to get biopsy results and find out if I have Barretts and what other tests might be needed.
Should I ask for food allergy test?? As far as I know I've always eaten anything before but maybe I've possibly developed some.
Do u think I should have a stool test for parasites or would the stomach biopsy show something??
Im new at this so I don't know what I should request!
I do need to see if bloodwork can be done to see what I may now be deficient in.
I was a pack a day smoker until March of this year and cut down between 3-5 a day....and drank Dr pepper/soda for yrs too so Its not a big surprise I've got these problems now :(
Wish I could weight at least 100-110 lbs......I weight about 115-117 in Feb before the thyroid and cipro mess!!!

Also....is it possible the cipro affected the gut bacteria....even tho it was only 3 pills???
