Recurring Pain on my Right Side - HELP!!!
In March I went to the dr concerning a pain on my right side, particularly after I eat, with bloating. I wasn't experiencing constipation or diarrhea. I kept thinking it was my gallbladder but my ultrasound came out normal, despite having severe, debilitating pain. One dr thought I had costocrondritis but another dr thought she was wrong because it's usually on the left side. I took an X-Ray but it showed nothing wrong in my chest.

Then I stated getting severe chest pain, chest clenching and heart burn. Finally a dr tested me for H pylori which tested positive. I went on the antibiotics, suffered extreme diarrhea, even after I stopped the antibiotics. I also experienced severe heartburn, acid reflex, throat pain, lasting for weeks at a time. I tried several PPIs, the only one that seems to be working the best (although not 100%) is dexilant which I am still on. I had an endoscopy in June, h pylori was eradicated, everything looked normal according to my GI doctor.

These last few days I have been experiencing pain on my side again.. it feels like it is my ribs (more towards the side, not the inner rib area). It radiates up and down my ribs, it is worse after eating or if I hear gurgling or gas in my stomach. It is a pinching pain. I have had diarrhea and bloating for at least a week now.

Can this be ...

Chronic IBS, maybe gas that is trapped ?
A muscle that I keep straining (poor posture, the way I workout .. ?)
Gallbladder malfunction?
Colitis? (My mom has crohns and colitis)
H pylori again even though I eradicated it in April ?

I cannot link it to any particular food but I can say that I usually develop GERD symptoms when I am extremely stressed.

The pain lasts days and days, it is exhausting and I don't know what to do. I saw my dr yesterday My dr doesn't think it's my gallbladder or h pylori. She thinks it's from my colon, because of the bloating I have. She told me to take Iberogast which is for IBS . She also told me to get tested for c diff because I told her that since I went on antibiotics for h pylori I've had more diarrhea . She said take probiotics regularly

Hi Elle. I'd listen to the doctor. Before I got to the bottom of your post, that's direction I was thinking. I've never taken Iberogast, but it's worth trying.

The colon comes up on the right side right under the ribs and makes people think they have all sorts of problems. There's a sharp bend in the colon there and gas has to get pushed back downward a bit to get going across toward the sigmoid colon. The colon likes to get active right after you eat too.

It looks like you have some good ideas to follow up on. Maybe the people on the IBS or Chrons or Ulcerative Colitis forums will have ideas too. I get constipation from my pain meds and take Miralax and Benefiber (wheat dextrin) to keep things moving.

Have you had a colonoscopy? That could rule out some bowel problems.

Meantime, I'd just keep trying to figure out if diet changes help. It can take several days of adding or eliminating a single food to see any results. Keep a food diary because you won't see a change immediately.

H Elle, From what you say though it does sound like GERD but its best to get things checked out especially as you say you have diarrhea..I think you should make an appointment to see a GI, and he may want to do a colonoscopy.

Your doc is correct regarding probotics these can be very helpful, and keeping a food diary for at least a month would be helpful too, you should soon know if any food triggers your diarrhea.

Have you been tested for lactose intolerance? That can cause diarrhea, cramps, and bloating after eating. Some people develop it later in life.

I never heard of costochondritis only happening on the left side. I have it on the right side. The pain from that depends on which rib is moving around and which connection point of the rib is loose. But costo pain wouldn't usually be connected to when you eat and wouldn't cause diarrhea or bloating, just delayed soreness after the loose rib has been pushed and prodded by something.

Funny story with costo was I took a spill when skiing one day and hammered my bad rib. It hurt like hell for a few weeks, but once it healed the pain has been less. I think after the injury some scar tissue formed and the rib is more stable now.
