Hi!
My name is Steven Ott and I am 19 years old.
Let me give you just a quick background of me. I currently am in college for accounting, dating a guy for almost a year, and I live with a food phobia called SED where I'm scared to try new foods.
Around a month ago I made a stupid decision to smoke weed and it was the worst thing I could ever do. I hallucinated while on it that I was choking and i thought I was going to die when it was all in my head. Two weeks after, I started having episodes of shortness of breath. It felt like I could get a full breath and I kept struggling for it. If I breathed low and tried not to deep breath, I would be able to once I tried, but the cycle would start all over.
I went to the ER and my EKG was fine and my X-ray. I noticed that every time I ate too it was worse. I would burp up liquid like I'm vomiting, but it would go back down. I went to the doctors and she said it might be acid reflux and she put me on Nexium ( I was already on it 5 days before I visited her because I thought it was that too) I also started to take Zantac two days after visiting her. On Thursday (9/18/15) I had a really weird episode where I was having depression/suicidal thoughts, but not of "kill yourself Steven " just like " what ifs" I feel like it was the meds because that day I didn't eat for almost two hours after taking the nexium. I called my doctor in a shock and she told me to switch to Prilosec and I said okay, but I'm pratically scared of those suicidal thoughts again.

Let me back myself up that I'm a very happy guy. I love my family, my boyfriend and feel like I have an amazing life. That depression moment was very spontaneous. I'm just upset because this is killing me. Does anyone have the same symptoms.

Ones minute I wonder if I'm feeling stress from the marijuana incident or if it set off my acid reflux, but it's hard because I don't know if it's mental or physical. It feels physical and sometimes I feel gassy a lot. :( it's just so scary not knowing. I really want an endoscopy.

Does anyone else get that shortness of breath with GERD? Also has anyone ever had weird spontaneous suicidal thoughts and depression with the drugs?

Steven Ott, geez you're so young to be suffering with that awful GERD. Yes, shortness of breath is very common with GERD. Just check out the many topics in this forum. I have been miserable with GERD and shortness of breath for 6 years, now.

I'm hoping I will be a good candidate for the Laproscopic Nissen Fundoplication surgery to give me my life back.

You might want to start with a good gastroenterologist to find out exactly what's causing your misery and go from there. Taking acid controllers doesn't cure the problem and trying to get off PPI"s is almost impossible and excruciatingly painful.

I wish you the best.

Thanks Linda!
I have a gastronomical appointment this Thursday and a doctors appointment this Friday.

I'm still curious if anyone else gets this. My burning isn't that bad, except I burp a lot if I eat certain things and sometimes feel like foods coming back up.

I noticed my mentality is off too. I get scared I'm choking because I feel like my food gets stuck in my esophagus. Could is maybe be a thyroid problem? It seriously is so frustrating not know and being in college this stresses me out because I fear I'm going to drive myself crazy, it's really hard not having any answers.:(

Does anyone have any other insight on this ?
I'm currently on Prilosec once in the morning and a prescribed Zantac for morning and night.

I was feeling really good after eating just smoothies and really healthy, but now I'm feeling crappy. The shortness of breath scares me. I feel nausea a lot of the times and I feel out of my body, it's really weird feelings.

I also am constantly touching my heart because it feels weird and I get worried something worse is happening and the doctors can't find it so they are blaming GERD.

I have an endoscopy in November and a barium swallow test this month, I think I just need some insight on like why I'm feeling like this.

Hi Steven,

I have experienced everything you are talking about! I started getting acid reflux about a year and a half ago. It started out of the blue but with reflux I would get really fast heart rates and shortness of breath. I was treating it with Prilosec. After being on it a few weeks I had a freaky episode where I couldn't breathe and my heart rate was hitting in the 160's. I ended up in the ER and they did an EKG and it was normal. The doctors all thought I was just having a panic attack. I didn't think so.

I went to my GP and they put me on daily Prilosec and my symptoms got worse. Since the acid reflux wasn't getting better I was then switched to Protonix. Once again all the symptoms were even more frequent and intense. Jittery feeling, numbness in my arms and legs, tingling in my face, mouth, a lot of different things but the worst was always feeling like I was choking and couldn't breathe. After a few weeks on the medication I started with feeling depressed and the anxiety got worse. Like you mentioned, not feeling suicidal but feeling like you are going to die, kinda visualize some random accident happening and you die, or you are sick, feelings that you can almost see yourself dying, if that makes sense. Almost a feeling of not being connected to anything. It freaked me out. I'm not at all like that. Scary. Nothing was getting better, so I was sent for an endoscopy.

I had the endoscopy and nothing crazy was found. I did have acid reflux. The gastroenterologist suggested I take Prontix twice a day. Against my better judgement I did. Big mistake. All my symptoms intensified. The depression, the anxiety, the choking, the jittery muscles, acid reflux, back pain, headaches, weird sensations of hot spots in my muscles, numbness, insomnia, and I then I started getting really bad abdominal pain.

I went to a lot of doctor appointments, ended up in urgent care 4 or 5 times with crazy out of control heart rates. They then thought I had anxiety and giving myself reflux from anxiety attacks. They tried giving me ativan, it didn't work. They did several more EKG's and IV's and even allergy medications, nothing worked.

I was pretty convinced it was the meds that were making me feel crazy!! They then thought maybe it was my gallbladder, so I had an abdominal ultra sound- nothing was wrong. So I went to a new gastroenterologist and he said from my Endoscopy he could tell I did have acid reflux and that I might me intolerant to the medications. That it IS possible! So many doctors told me no. He said all these acid reflux meds are different but in the same class and have common elements that some people are intolerant to. Prilosec, Protonix, Prevacid are all in the same class. He wanted me to test out Prevacid to see if that one had the same effect as the others, it does. I'm now scheduled to take a test to see if I am intolerant to all of these. These three medicines are all "zole" medications- the non name brand names of each of these all end in zole.

I don't know the results of that test yet, but he said those who are intolerant have to be treated in an "old school" medicine way that requires him to try medications that were used before this class of medications was thought to work best. It was explained to me that some other over the counters like Zantac are a little better because they don't stay in your system. Even if you have problems with them they go through you in hours so they don't have long enough time to cause all the other crazy side effects. So they are a quick fix to bad reflux symptoms but hopefully get out of your system before causing too many side effects.

When I tried a week off of Protonix, Prevacid, Prilosec I felt so much better as far as side effects. The reflux had to be managed with Zantac but the crazy feelings started to go away. Maybe try talking to a gastroentrologist about giving that a try as well.

Good luck with your EDG!

Hi Bluenickel13

just wondering if you are completely recovered from GERD and anxiety? I also experienced your symptoms (tingling, insomia, feels always doomed). Gastro doc give dixelant then nexium all gives me anxiety attacks, bloating, shortness of breath. I can only take zantac 150 mg with lesser side effects but still refluxing but manageable and don't want to go back to PPI.

Hi Arnel,

No, I'm not recovered from GERD or anxiety but it's better. My gastro doctor took me off all PPI's and said to stay off of them. That all the crazy side effects that we have both had are from the PPI's and that I am intolerant to to the whole class of medications. He has me on Zantac 150 mg twice a day and Carafate once a day. The side effects have faded but are not gone. I still have anxiety but it's less then when on PPI's although the reflux is a little worse. I still haven't found the right balance of anything. Although I prefer the burning to the doomed and anxious feelings. Never thought I would rather have reflux. Haha :) I go in a week to have a manometry and PH test. Have you ever had that?
