Good Evening from Texas!
Just found this forum tonight, and it has been comforting to know that I am not crazy or alone!!
I have had stomach problems since I was a child, constant heartburn for which I was given maalox or rolaids or tums (I am now 59). Was diagnosed with GERD about 25 years ago, and have been on every known medication with little relief. I also have celiac disease. So stomach issues have been a constant for my entire life.
I was hospitalized with aspiration pneumonia for a week last spring. I believe it was from GERD but doctor said he didn't know. I have a very strained, hoarse voice from the damage the acid has done to my vocal cords. I have chronic shortness of breath after I eat.
I have been part of a clinical trial for celiac disease, and had an EGD in September. Along with the usual gastritis, esophagitis, reflux, hernia the GI also believes I now have Barretts Esophagus. He was unable to get biopsy at that time because it was not part of the celiac study. I now have another EGD scheduled for the 16th of this month for the biopsies. After all these years of acid, I am a bit worried.
I really like the GI doctor I saw. He asked me why I never had the Nissen and the hernia repaired. I told him that I didn't know anything about it! to think that perhaps all this damage could have been prevented! But because I found this forum, I will not be afraid and will welcome the possibility of not being sick 24 hours a day!!
