Hi everyone,
I'm completely new to this forum idea of posting about your illness thingy, but wanted to find out if anyone else is struggling as I am, and whether I have anything to worry about?

I had the Linx system done exactly two weeks ago, and although it has miraculously brought back my voice, (constant painful laryngitis,) stopped my sore throats and relieved my bloating, heartburn etc, it has given me a new and extremely painful issue. I am struggling to eat because of (I can only assume) locked air/wind at the base of my oesophagus /top of stomach and sphincter area, which is absolutely intolerable. I just cannot eat a proper meal, and sometimes it's even painful to drink, especially in the mornings, after being horizontal in bed, I suppose. I don't seem able to burp wind up (never have been able to do it, in spite of begging my little boys to teach me - they are masters at bodily noises and expelling of wind from all directions!) - but the air locks stop me from being able to push any food in, and although slightly better than a week ago, I'm losing weight at a rate of knots, and just can't get a proper meal inside me. Has anyone had the same side effect and can I look to the future knowing that this will settle down? I'm frequently to be seen on my hands and knees trying not to be sick and unable to stand up with the spasms of pain I get when trying to eat and drink. The problem is not with my throat, which I had been told to expect - I don't have a problem actually swallowing. It's when the food hits my stomach that the trouble begins.
I'd be very grateful if anyone else can fill me in on their experiences, if similar, and how it was resolved. Thanks

Hello Sarah64. Want to welcome you to our forum. There will be others responding . I feel you are very early in your recovery. It is surgery. Your insides were moved around to implant the Linx and there is probably some irritation in that area. We feel that it is important to keep the Linx working while it is forming the 'goo' around it. We were told you still have to chew, chew, chew your foods before swallowing-- that this is really important, followed with a sip (not gulp) of water. You may be swallowing too much air-- stay away from straws, carbonated stuff, gassy stuff for a while. Maybe Beano would help. I feel you should ask your surgeon your questions-- ours did another barium swallow at that point and upon viewing the video it wil determine if it is working appropriately-- such as opening and closing. Let us know what the surgeon tells you so we can learn too. (We've found that even though some docs tell you that you can immediately start eating anything post implant , we have not found that as so. Body needs time to heal and to 'accept the foreign device'. Think about all the good it has done for you and know that healing is in progress . Also the esophagus itself must relearn how to swallow-- work a little harder. Wish you well. Pat
