Hello,

I just found this forum and read for an hour before I posted.  I think this is a wonderfull community with great advice and insight.

I have been diagnosed with severe gastritis and gerd under an endoscope.  I tried every acid blocking drug and none of them worked well.  Prescription Prilosec worked a little.  Then after a few years of trying these drugs I started getting pain in my guts if you will.  I then had a "flex" and everything seemed fine.  Also had every type of blood test done.  According to my doctors I should be healthy as a horse.

Can taking proton pump inhibitors cause IBS?

I've heard that they can create an imbalence in a persons intestinal flora, which allows bad bacteria to flourish, which leads to IBS.  This happens because the stomach needs acid for the good bacteria to harmonize and flourish in the intestines.  But PPI's prevent the proper amount of acid to occur.

Now I take probiotics and they seem to help my IBS, but my gastritis won't go away.

Any advice on helping my gastritis?  I drink a cup of water and my stomich gurgles, it's so delicate.

Drugs aren't an option, as I feel they only make things worse.

Thank You,

Alfred

My stomach makes noise too no matter what I eat. This is better on the Nexium. I have yet to have an endoscope done. What did they see to diagnose gerd? I am like you, I don't think it can be good to mess with the body by taking drugs. I am on Nexium now because I was so desperate but I am looking for a better solution. I don't know anything about gastritis but I hope someone else on here can help you. I would love to hear your details about the scope.

A flex is when they put a camera up the bottom end. Please try

marshmallow root tea,
and
licorice chews.

They help me better than nexium and prilosec.

They saw irritation on my esophogus, for gerd and inflamation on my stomic lining for gastritis.

If you start to get ab pain stop taking nexium, just my 2 cents, as I think it leads to IBS. No hard proof, just a lot of antedotal, and logical reasoning.

For those who are desperate, this one suppliment has been a life saver.

Gastramet by "cardiovascular research ltd." I took two capsules after every meal for a month, it calmed down my gastritis to almost nothing. The only problem is finding, and for me paying for it, which is why I am searching for a cure. I hate being dependent on drugs or supplaments.

also Rhizinate is by "PhytoPharmica"

Hi Alfred and Welcome to HealingWell!! :)

You asked if PPI's caused IBS?  I just posted a thread on the Allergy Forum today re "Asthma Risk Higher for People with Bowel Disease" http://www.nlm.nih.gov/medlineplus/news/fullstory_26820.html

I don't think the PPI's cause IBS (my opinion only), however, allergies, along with the inflammation that is brought on by them, may play a bigger part in a lot of ailments not yet identified.

Thanks for sharing.

Hugs, Teri tongue
