I was diagnosed with Gastritis about 2 years ago. Still suffering though. Taking 20mg Omeprazole (Prilosec) every morning, PLUS an extra 15mg Lansoprazole (Pepcid) every OTHER evening, PLUS 2 Pepcids (10mg x 2 = 20mg) every day. And DGL before meals.

I started weaning off my 2:00 Pepcid on August 31. Finally a few days ago I got down to half of my 2:00 pill. So I'm at 15mg Pepcid every day. But my stomach hurts now more than ever. I did have lots of acid rebound after each drop (first drop was 25% of the pill and I kept it there for maybe 2 weeks). Then I dropped 12.5% and then 6.25% twice. The last 6.25% a few days ago seems to be the worst, maybe because my stomach is already sore from the other drops?

Is 7 weeks too fast to wean off only 5mg of Pepcid if you've been taking it every day for 2 years? And how long does it take for the stomach to recover to the point that it's okay with the lower dose? I'd like to drop to half of the evening dose as well, but I want to wait until I'm feeling a little better.

Thanks!

Librooks. I haven't read your other posts but, -- I was wondering if you have tried George's Aloe. Suppose to be soothing to gastritis. It doesn't have citric acid in it and tastes and looks like water. Maybe it will help ease your discomfort while getting / reducing the medication. Also some 'tums' ?

(Having a hard time trying to understand the dosages above). We were taking Prevacid and it took longer then seven weeks to get off. Splitting it down so gradually and even down to one capsule being divided into eight. Trying to remember but it was about 6-7 months and antacid use and aloe with it for GERD. We bought empty capsules at health food store and gained steady finger and hands splitting the itty bitty pellets. At the time the doctor told us he never had anyone with rebound. I told him the web and journals told all about rebound.

Wish you well friend. Pat

Well I wouldn't say your tapering was too fast, it seems like a very sensible slow reduction to me.

But if you are not healed and still having symptoms then any reduction in medication is going to make it worse. Did you still have symptoms before you started to taper off?

I first started with gastritis about 2 years ago too and am still getting flare ups. I wouldn't even consider coming off PPIs unless I felt 100% for a few weeks.

What does your diet look like? You may have to make it stricter as you ween off the PPIs to lessen the effects then once off PPIs reintroduce 'bad' foods gradually.

Thank you, Pat and Andy. I appreciate your help! No I haven't tried the aloe water. I'm terrified of trying something new. I'm on a very restricted diet. I think a lot of it is anxiety too, so I do take benzos like Valium and Xanax when it gets really bad. Interestingly, my stomach feels pretty good when I'm on benzos.

I'm also taking 20mg Prilosec every morning, PLUS a 15mg Prevacid (which equals 20mg Prilosec) every TWO nights. So I'm already taking acid-reducing meds. I just want to stop the Pepcid because I think I'm taking too many acid reducing drugs, and they can cause your body to not absorb nutrients well (I do drink Ensure and Boost which have lots of vitamins and minerals). Plus keeping track of the schedule is a full time job. I take the Pepcid at 2:00pm and another at 8:00pm, and if I miss it by just an hour I start feeling the rebound.
