Welcome to Healing Well! Before my Nissen, I was on 40mg of Protonix (a similar PPI) before breakfast and dinner as well. Please check out and read the following PDF link with information about
how to get the most out of your PPI. It will explain a lot, and might just help the medication work much better for you. I think you will find it very helpful, and eye-
opening. It's too bad doctors don't provide the PDF when they give patients the prescript
How long have you been taking the PPI? It generally takes about
a week of consistent use before you see a lot of improvement. PPIs are meant to be taken on an empty stomach an hour before eating, and the first thing you eat should be high in protein, to set the PPI in motion.
You can still take antacids with the PPI, so if you have breakthrough heartburn, try some liquid antacid to help make you more comfortable.
You can also take Zantac (Ranitidine) at bedtime, if you feel you need it. I was prescribed 300mg Zantac at bedtime on top of the 40mg PPI before breakfast and dinner. Do you have the head of your bed elevated? That can really make a difference in helping gravity keep acid in your stomach.
Hang in there...there are lots of members here who understand what you're going through. Glad you've joined the forum!Best wishes,
