As some of you may know I underwent a Toupet fundoplication on the 3rd of February however my symptoms returned 5 weeks later. I was back on Ranitidine 75mg which controlled it. This would give me relief for about 3 days and then I'd need to take it again, almost like clockwork. Its now coming up to 6 days without needing to take anything and I'm absolutely reflux free. This is where I'm confused, as I thought the wrap hadnt worked but now it seems to be again and I can't fathom why! It's still early days and it could return yet, however I was wondering if anyone had the slightest idea why this could be. Could I have still been experiencing acid rebound from the PPIs?

Any ideas would be helpful!

Not sure what your recovery was like and how soon you started to eat normal. Is it possible that what you thought was acid reflux was not acid reflux but something that mimicked reflux?

I had a Toupet and repair of Paraesh. Hernia done on March 3rd and during the recovery I have experienced a lot of symptoms that seemed to mimic symptoms I had before surgery. I experienced chest pain, trouble swallowing and what I thought was reflux. Now, as more time passes, I can see that it was simply a matter of given it time. It takes a while for the swelling from the surgery to subside and swallowing to get back to normal. Over the last few days, the chest pain has subsided, I am beginning to swallow a lot more normally, and what I thought might be reflux is beginning to subside. Assuming this progress continues, it would seem that in a few or several weeks these symptoms will completely disappear.

I was on PPIs before surgery and stopped them shortly after surgery.

The esophagus is a dumb organ. It senses any irritation as reflux. This combined with surgical healing can give people a false sense of reflux. Happens a lot. Sometimes it can even be food sitting at the wrap and fermenting. While the wrap is settling in and swelling goes up and down a lot of crazy things can happen.

This is one reason surgeons like to wait X amount of time before they will say it has failed or is a success. Realistically expect ups and downs like this for the first year and then it may come and go past that time. Everyone heals at a different rate depending on how much damage there was, how their body deals with the surgery, and how you treat your new designed system.

Take care,
Bill

That's great news JB! Gives me hope for my toupet, which seems to be behaving itself for now!
