Hi everyone,
I thought that maybe a thread that creates a list of foods or food ideas either locarb or just GERD and IBS friendly would help. I have come across many posts from members asking about examples for foods in different forums - Fibro, chronic pain, GERD, IBS, Chrons etc....that would help or at least prevent symptoms despite their conditions. I myself am always on internet researching food lists, so why not get a list of our very own right here....after all, this is a great site with lots of hits. In fact, HW threads often come up as a site for some subjects I google.
So here goes the first idea (I got it from the thread  "good results Dr. Norm" it was a reply)
Sustitute for mashed potatoes
it's not mashed potato but it's really nice --and low carb cook equal amounts of swede and pumpkin and mash with a little cream---6gs carb--not bad!

And here is a question....
does anyone have any substitutes for pasta, spaghetti, lasagna...something to use my homemade sp. sauce with?

Let's make this a great thread...anyone with any ideas for food, please share them, this includes recipes.

Hi D

If you desperately want something to spread cheese on, ryvitas are low carb and also those polystyrene-like rice crackers.I allow myself these about twice a week.

I'd like to recommend a book I've been using called The LOW-Carb Vegetarian by Celia Brooks Brown. The recipes are very tasty and just to give you some examples there are things like spinach and ricotta gnocchi--carbs 6g,almond muffins--carbs 6g and cottage cheese pancakes with blueberry puree.

Hi again,

I found my substitute for pasta....spaghetti squash. You bake it and apparently it shreds like spaghetti. I'll let you all know of the results soon as I try it. Already bought one, just waiting to bake it. Now I spent over an hour looking through all kinds of diet sites etc before finding this substitute. There aren't many ideas posted here, what's up HW members...not in the mood to share your healthy food ideas, recipes, substitutes??? confused

NORM - Since you disagreed with one of the suggestions given..it would be nice of you to post an example or idea or something re a food. devil

I should add that I have been eating apples...and I still dont have heartburn despite giving up my pills yesterday, but its only my third day. So can't we say what doesnt work for some, may work for others. There are exceptions to all rules and us chronic sufferers aren't always "text book cases". tongue

I dont mind disagreement. If there wasnt any this world wouldnt get anywhere...

So what do you mean Norm that you predict problems? What kind of problems?

BTW... Does anyone know what is in apples that eliminates the heartburn? I am looking, like Im sure the rest of the world is, for a cause AND cure. Not just a remedy like eating apples. The apples baffle me, because arent they acidic like many other fruits? So if it can be distinguished what it is in apples, maybe there are other things I can try so I dont turn into an apple.

See, this is becoming my frustration... I have now been reading all kinds of testimonials and theories, but no one has given any reasons why they work, just that they work. The only explanation I have read is yours Norm that says while breaking down carbs excessive gas is given off causing reflux.....(Did I get that right?).

BTW - There are a couple things I have eaten since I can remember and they invlovle sandwiches. I absolutely love bread. Isnt bread a synonym for carbohydrates?...LOL...anyway....if I want to eat something that I KNOW will absolutely not give me heartburn, I eat a bread, turkey and cheese sandwich. Can you help me understand that while carbs might cause reflux, I get no heartburn from bread? Is your theory that the reflux is the problem not the acid?

Also, I still wonder why smoking or drinking MIGHT cause acid reflux. Anyone? (besides the carbs in alcohol).

Hi Jhonny,

I dont rank high on the list of knowledeable members at HW, but I am good at researching and coming up with useful links...sometimes. I hope this one helps you unravel the "smoke causes heartburn" mystery.

Happy reading!

Johnny,
Yes, my theory is that its the carbs are causing gas via hungry gut microbes. Bread and apples are loaded. You may not have immediate reflux from either, but eventually I am betting it is carbs like these and others that catch up to you. Try controlled carb dieting. I believe it will help. Don't worry about the smoking (what ever it is you smoke) in terms of reflux if you're low carbing. See my other posts for more details.

Just a little update on food....couscous...although healthy is packed...and I mean packed with carbs!!!!!

Green apples not working so well with me...felt a possible uncoming bout of heartburn...apples are out for me, darn it!

Olives...apparently they are very good and virtually carb-less  lol. But I havent found a site where the carbs are listed yet..so it isnt concerend...if anyone has the right carb for olives..please post it.

Cheese, blocked appears to have the least amount of carbs...at least less than feta. But most cheeses are fairly low in carbs.

Don't mean to state the obvious...but I know I for one sometimes miss the obvious completly. So just in case...any preserved food, like canned as well as immitation foods are packed with carbs - even some fish. Which brings to mind - mollusques are heavy with carbs..all other fish are 0.

And if you are on a low carb diet...popcorn is certainly out of the question (unless this is where good and bad carbs come into play). There are like 80 something grams of carbs in just a cup. WOW! I remember hearing you should eat popcorn if you are on a diet...its so good for you! My how things change.

All I can think of for now. Waiting for more ideas from other members. Breakfast ideas would be most welcomed. I believe there is at least another member trying to come up with something other than bacon and eggs  LOL.

Here is a site that will help you look up the amount of carbs in different foods. There are quite a few foods listed.

Dee,
Popcourn is much less than you state and is oK in modation.

Sorry about the apples. Yes, they are pretty much pure carb. Apple juice has as many carbs as sugar sweetened soda pop.

Hmmm, I don't want to post false information...and my gosh I certainly dont want to condemn popcorn LOL. I don't know about the popcorn Norm...I got the figures from the carb calculator link I placed in a post up above. Actually, it was 77.something g of carb per cup. Is the calculator off...or is it my perception of it...then again, I could very well be misusing the darn tool.
I sure hope you are right (so does my hubby) we both really like popcorn. How does a person accuratly count carbs then if not with a tool like the calculator Im using? Geez, I could have my intake of carbs all wrong. Thanks for empathising with me over my sudden loss of apples. It has been a devastating blow tongue . Only way I can deal with all this and keep my sanity is to crack a few jokes and laugh. Might not be the healthiest person in the world...but there isnt anything wrong with my sense of HA! HA!. In fact, its probably the healthiest part of me  devil  .
So much information to absorb...makes me nerveous  lol. Hope everyone is doing well.

OK cool, but what is it about the apples that take the heartburn away?

FYI...LOL...Started taking Prilosec since endo Friday and of course I can eat a horse and doesnt bother me now. I still have mixed feelings about taking drugs in general but at least I am making my family happy for now and I can eat and drink without discretion! I will post again after I get biopsy results tomorrow. Prelim...doc says doesnt look cancerous.

Johnny,
I thought about you the other day when I was at my wits end w/reflux. I tried almost everything, vinegar, maalox, yogurt, finally, an apple. Well, I starting feeling a lot better, but don't know if it was actually the apple or a combination of everything else.

Apples:20 gr (medium size)according to my book.

Apple juice bothers me, but (green)apples are tolerable. I read somewhere that Papaya has natural digestive enzymes. Has anyone gotten any relief w/eating this fruit???? Book indicates 1 medium 30.4 gr.

I believe it was meant for me to find this Atkins book on my shelf, because the carb gram counter section will allow me to pay closer attention to my food intake in relation to carbs. It should help give me an idea if Norm's theory really works.

It also outlines Carb fattening items;possible weight gain for me.....Problem, weight gain is virtually impossible if Norm's theory is correct, too many carbs assoc. w/fattening items;hence, reflux :{

BTW, I had more than a cup of popcorn on last night and shortly afterwards some reflux symptoms started. I had to run for the Maalox. LOL Sometimes, I am a glut for punishment. Anyhooo, it just gets old w/not being able to eat almost anything, especially when i'm hungry.

Johnny, I'm happy you can eat and drink w/o descretion, and good luck w/your results.

Vanessa!!!! You are my shining light today. Thank you so much for shedding light on my green olive carb count as well as the popcorn. But my, 2.5grams is a lot for olives - I take it you meant per one olive right? It is interesting that eating it gave you heartburn. My daughter had some the other night and I had a couple of handfuls (before we looked up the carb count)...I got heartburn too. And thank you for the breakfast idea. Change will be good. How many carbs in one of those muffins? I've never had papaya...but Im going to try it. Would be interested in knowing if anyone has tried it and what the results were. Im trying my sp squash tonight and will let you all know how it is. Johnny...I've been running a search everyday about the apples since you asked...and still havent come up with anything. I will keep trying. I wonder if its just an apple/johnny special combo...I had to give em up cause they are causing me heartburn. sad   I read a bit about the "smoking" and dont have enough info to be 100 per cent sure, but so far, Im getting that in some cases, it can actually help, depending on all the factors at play including meds etc. That would be good news wouldnt it? LOL Still dont know why etc...sorry! Hey, have you called a local Deetox center....they are always eager to give out information and would gladly find out the info for you if they dont have it. Well, they do here anyhow. Best of luck with your dieting everyone and keep posting Vanessa. I have a feeling you and I are going to become best buds..you've got some calculating skills LOL  tongue

Johnny,
I thought about you the other day when I was having a flare w/reflux meant.......Thinking about your theory on apples! I decided to eat an apple and was praying your theory on instant relief worked, because I was feeling pretty bad. And, as I indicated earlier, I tried everything else I could think of prior to eating an apple.

Dee, book indicates, 1 olive(pitted)2.5 gr. Bran-Soy Muffins 4.0 per serving.

Dee,
Check the counter. It may be referring to "unpopped" popcorn.
