Is 40 mg of nexium equal to 20 mg of prilosec?  I have talked to several pharmacists and about half told me to take 2 prilosec to equal 40 mg of nexium and the other half said 20 of prilosec is the same as 40 of nexium?  Quite confusing!!  Anyone know?

I used to take prilosec OTC but it did not do much for me...so they switched me to nexium (i am on a high does of it...like 2 of them instead of 1) a day and it works very well for me.

I was always told it was 2 prlosec to 1 nexium...but I am not sure...best of luck!

Hi Hearty,
I am taking Prolisec x's 2@d, but will cut back to one again soon. Just don't want to take too much med. I cut back to 1 some wks ago after feeling really good, but was eating all kinds of junk food and had to go back to 2 @d.

Hope you're still getting great results.

My doctor's nurse explained to me that it would take several months to get this under control for me and then I can try cutting back to every other day and in then on an as needed basis. My husband had it really bad a few years ago for a short period of time and then it never came back. He went to the doctor originally cause he thought it was his heart. The prilosec (prescription at that time) really worked for him. He only needed it a few months and then it was over. He has since found out he is a type 1 diabetic so he eats really low carb...and he has lost 50 pounds. There must be a connection. I am not overweight but my stomach is fat. Does that make sense? Not really fat but not flat!! My doctor tells me I am fine and to go out in public and look around if I want to see people who are fat. But I still think the little bit of belly fat I do have might be part of the acid reflux? Who knows....I am just so grateful the 2 prilosecs are working for me. It is so good to feel normal (99% at least) but so much better than a few weeks ago. Yeah....junk food probably isn't a good idea for any of us. Thanks for your reply and your concern. I just love this site:)

Hearty,
Glad the Prolisec is still working well! Not sure if stomach fat causes a problem w/GERD, but if you really want to rid yourself of the stomach, buy a cheap Hula-Hoop. If you have never used one, or have forgotten how to use one, it will all come back to you just like walking. I gained some weight about 9 yrs ago....mostly belly......The Hula Hoop did the trick in losing it. I don't like crunches......too much work!

Best Wishes! Stay well,
Vanessa

Thanks for the tip....a hula hoop does sound a lot more fun than crunches. I never feel like I am doing a crunch right!! Just to look at me, you would say I don't need to lose weight. I lost 35 pounds 2 years ago so I know what it is like to actually be fat....but the belly did not go!! Smaller but still wiggly:) Hope you are having a good day. I ate way too much this weekend and feeling a little chest burn. Self-control!?? Smiles!!!!

Who has better luck with Prilosec than Nexium???? I was taking Prilosec in 2003 and it fixed my reflux so I quit taking it. Well, in 2005 (Aug) it came back and I tried Prilosec again and it didn't work. The acid reflux got so bad that I had an endoscopy done and he put me on Nexium 40mg a day. It has been day 9 now and I can tell that I'm taking "something" but it's still not working very well. The nurse told me to take another nexium, now, before I go to sleep. Anyone else do this??? I don't want to OD!! Any side effects from taking 2 instead of 1???

I'm scared to try it because of the OD factor, but if it makes my reflux better I will do it. What kind of symptoms would I experience if it WAS too much???

Thank you!
Michelle :)

I've been taking two Nexium a day for several weeks now on the direction of my gastro doctor. My gp also suggested it while I was waiting to get in to see my gastro dr. I'm pretty sure I've seen other posts where people have taken more than one per day.

I don't what the side effects of taking too much might be. I'm more worried about long term. I would think there must be some effect to the chemistry inside the stomach if no/little acid is being produced. The gastro doctor doesn't seem to think it's that big a deal. I've been feeling better recently and plan to stop taking the second Nexium soon.

I'm taking the two Nexium about 12 hours apart -- morning and early evening. The instructions said 1 hour before mealtime so I take the evening one about 1 hour before dinner. I don't know if this would make any difference.

Good luck.

Having to up your dose to more than one pill is sometimes common and should not cause any harmful side effects.  I am on Prevacid 30 and for a while, one just didn't cut it.  My doc had me go to two a day, now I can go for days without taking one.  My GERD is primarily nighttime and I haven't had a problem recently.  I am a Medical Assistant and I definitely see increased doses.  I have a patient who sometimes needs four 30 mg Prevacid's a day and that is per his gastroenterologist.  Obviously with any medication where the preferred dosage is one pill per day, such as Zyrtec 10 mg for allergies or Singulair 10 mg for asthma, you want to try and use that maintenance dose.  But, sometimes, I have to take two Zyrtecs a day when my allergies are really bad and that is fine.  A PPI (proton pump inhibitor) is not in a medication class where doses need to be absolutely specific such as an insulin dose or a Coumadin dose.  As long as you have the ok from the GI, you should be able to play with the med depending upon your symptoms at that time.

Just started 2 40 mg nexiums..and starting to feel better. I too would like to get to where I do not take any cause I worry about long term effects. I can[t understand how it can be beneficial to cut down the acid in your stomach. Just want to pop the top on a soda and drink it...there is no way I would do that now....oh the agony!!!
