Since taking the nexium (now otc prilosec) I have gradually started having sinus symptoms....headache, drainage, weird feeling in nose.  Is this a side effect or just an unrelated allergy thing?  I know noone can diagnose me....just asking for some opinions.  I have been on the ppis about 2 months....these symptoms have been going on about 2 weeks but are getting pretty rough. Thanks.

Hearty,
Chances are it's unrelated. A cold or alergies. There is a small chance that it is related, however, because these drugs neutralize you stomach acid and microbes from your intestines are then more able to invade you stomach, esophagus, lungs and sinuses. There is twice the risk of pneumonia, for instance, in people on these drugs. This was shown by a large study using data from hundreds of thousands of people published in the Oct 2004 American Journal of Medicine.

Norm
Just my humble opinion

How interesting that you bring this up hearty. Wouldn't mind getting an opinion on my experience. I've ackowledged a sore throat as a side effect from my PPI in the past on a very short term basis. Well now Im dealing with something else and Im not sure if its PPI side effect or unrelated. Been feeling a little ill for past week or so, but on Saturday evening (3am actually) I took a severe asthma attack. I thought I was going to drown from the mucus. I hadn't had an attack of that severity in over 10 years. I haven't recovered yet.  In fact I've had a fever on and off since (never more than 101.2) and a bronchial cough so bad it makes me feel like the front of my face is going to litterally blow off. I do have an inhaler that I take when needed (yes, I need it and am taking it) and am taking Rx Nasacort AQ, Drixoral, Buckley's and I was taking Naproxen but got a drug with some codeine in it last night (ratio - Lenoltec No1) and it has alleviated the cough some. I am calling my doc today to see If I should go in or not. Meanwhile, what do you guys think...could my PPI have something to do with this. It does list "flue like" symptoms as a side effect. Would appreciate your thoughts. May not be posting for a bit, but will def read. Thanks in advance. hearty...I wish you best of luck with your symptoms...from experience, the best approach to allergies and sinus problems is prevention...see your doc asap and nip this in the bud. Let us know how you make out.

Hi everyone,

Just getting better now which is why I haven't been on much. Well, it wasnt my ppi. I forget yet another diagnosis I got several years ago - COPD. So what I had was an acute bronchitis attack (I have chronic bronchitis and asthma) that was most likely triggered by allergies and paint fumes (I had been painting in the house for a couple of days) and made worse by puffing on an expired inhaler. Anyhow, I did go to my doc and was put on appropriate meds...told to make a list of diagnosis and stop "forgetting" about conditions, especially serious ones like this. I'm a very stubborn person and harbor a few quirks....so sometimes if I don't particularly like a diagnosis I tend to push it aside and try and forget about it - as if  it will go away or something HA! Thankfully, I finally quit smoking! I am having a hard time with GERD again probably because of the extra meds AND I've not been very faithful with a lo-carb (hubby has brought home take out several times because I was sick etc.) So am trying to get back on track here but it will take some time. Also started new job...first time in workforce in 5 years. It's only part time...but still, one more thing to adjust to. So as soon as I can my game together...will start posting meals and food ideas again. Hope everyone is doing well.
