I have been a licensed massage therapist in New York City for over 30 years. I also use applied kinesiology extensively in my practice. I know how to get rid of the great majority of hiatal hernias and resultant acid reflux, and have helped many patients (including myself.)

Most medical treatment is symptomatic, in particular with proton pump inhibitors, which suppress production of hydrochloric acid (HCl). This may be effective in removing discomfort, but it does not remove the CAUSE of the symptoms. Furthermore it can be very harmful to the health since HCl is essential for good health, necessary as it is for digestion, preventing certain infections--especially yeast infections--and absorbing iron and calcium. The best treatment for any illness is to fix it at its cause.

Apart from dangerous surgery, the medical profession offers little help in treating the cause of the problem. They may give helpful suggestions about food and postural habits, but they don't get to the real issue, which is a dysfunction in the valve which closes off the esophagus from the stomach. This is known as a hiatal hernia.

The stomach is supposed to be acidic--very acidic--so that you can digest your food. But the esophagus is meant to be free of acid, or it gets burned. That is why it so important that the valve separating the stomach and esophagus be working properly. In my experience, the vast majority of hiatal hernias are caused by weak connective tissue--generally throughout the body--producing different dysfunctions depending on the part of the body affected. When it affects the diaphragm you get hiatal hernia and all the symptoms it causes.

So the treatment must be to do something to strengthen the connective tissue in the body. That is all! Once the tissues are stronger the hiatal hernia disappears as do all other dysfunction caused by the weakness elsewhere in the body.

I should point out that there is also the option of manually fixing the hernia. What the hernia actually is, is the stomach passing up through the diaphragm INTO the esophagus, which is how the acid gets there. It can easily be fixed by reaching up under the rib cage, getting a grip on the stomach and actually pulling it down--out of the esophagus. That may provide near-immediate relief. The problem is that the underlying weakness has not been altered, so there is no guarantee that the stomach won't ride up again into the esophagus.

What I do is to find out which nutritional supplements will strengthen the connective tissue in the body, thus effectively removing the cause of the hernia. Different people need different supplements, and I must determine which supplements are needed through applied kinesiology muscle testing.
Some people need only a single supplement, some need 2, or 3, and occasionally a person will need 4 different supplements. But again we are dealing ONLY with fixing the connective tissue, not with symptomatic relief. The symptoms disappear as soon as the tissue gets stronger and does its job properly. I can give you an idea of the supplements you MAY need to fix the problem. But you shouldn't experiment on your own, because the exact combination you need would need to be individually assessed. Anyway, the supplements are Ligaplex I and Calma Plus (both made by Standard Process), octacosanol (I use Bioctasol Forte, made by Biotics Research) and possibly an adrenal supplement (either Dessicated Adrenal or Drenatrophin PMG--also made by Standard Process--but which one you need would be determined by muscle testing.) Most people do not need all four supplements so it's impossible to give a "recipe" in a post. But the supplements work beautifully, essentially eliminating the hernia and its symptoms.

A pleasant "side effect" is the probable elimination of intestinal gas. Most people with hiatal hernia also are DEFICIENT in HCl. This seems surprising because they believe they are producing too much! While there are some people who do over-produce acid, this is relatively rare. The reason you feel acidic is that the acid is going where it does not belong--into the esophagus. But if you have gas, it is usually because there is TOO LITTLE HCl. This means your food is not digesting and so it putrefies. This causes gas to form. The main reason you are not producing HCl has to do with a shift of position of your cranial bones. This effectively shuts off your ability to produce HCl, and you become deficient. Again, this is caused by weak connective tissue. When you fix it in one place in the body you are fixing it everywhere else at the same time. So the gas would disappear at the same time as the reflux. It takes about 6 weeks for the treatment to work, but the change is immediate when it occurs.

I have removed your email address from you post, as it is against the forum rules. I urge you to read the forum rules before posting any further. Thanks.

Has this worked for any of your patients?

Absolutely. If the initial muscle test indicates that the supplements will work, it is pretty much a sure thing. But it is necessary to stay with the nutritional supplement protocol or it could come back.

Hi Tom,

I am really interested in your experience with hiatal hernias. I am suffering from the symptoms of a hiatal hernia and am working with a practitioner/bodyworker/chiropractor who is pulling my stomach down back into it's proper place. However, it keeps coming back up and that's when I have pain everytime I eat. Interestingly, I also have chronic pain in my body (feet, knees, neck) for the past 6 years following an injury. Your post about how hiatal hernias are a direct result of weak connective tissue makes total sense to me, and it makes me believe that my issues are most likely all related. I am starting to take Ligaplex 1 since that's what my intuition is telling me my body needs. Wondering if you have any other suggestions, or if you do muscle testing virtually as I'm located in California? How long does it take to heal? I See my practitioner once a week to pull the stomach back down into it's place for the past 2 months, but it keeps coming back up. Curious to see if taking LIgaplex 1 will help it heal and stay in place. Any info is greatly appreciated.

Thank you.

Dear Katie,
Determining the exact supplements you need is way too technical and complicated to explain in a post here. If you take only Ligaplex 1, you may be lucky, but if you need more than that you will get no results. The only thing I can suggest is that, if your chiropractor is willing and open minded, to do the following:

I don't know if your other symptoms are related to this. Since they began after an injury, I don't know what effect that had on you.

It is crucial that you give the supplements an adequate time to kick in.
Best of luck,
Tom

I have edited out the medical advice that you are giving in this forum. I will refer you to Rule #8; If you are a medical professional do not use these forums to give medical advice or promote your business.
