Hi, I'm early 30's, I've been on Pantropazole (a brand of PPI) for about 7 years. I take 40mg per day, it works okay. If I eat too much, get too tired, miss my meds, or drink more than a couple of alcoloic beverages, I wake up the next day with a burnt throat and asphogas. It's hurts. Depending on how bad it is, this can take 3-8 days to fully recover and it really takes it out of me. Sometimes it happens for no reason. When it's really bad, breathing hurts for a couple of days. This whole ordeal doesn't happen that often though, about once every 2 months. I generally double up to 80mg if I feel it coming on. On a daily basis, I get a bit of mild burning in the morning when I wake up. So the meds are not great, but they work to a reasonable extent.
I don't like the idea of taking 40mg of PPI for the rest of my life. Low magnesium, Low B12 and the associated risks of those. All of these are of course increased risk only, but after what will likely be 40+ years of it, risks add up.
I've talked to my surgeon and I have booked the NF wrap for a month. There has been a massive amount of information on this forum and I am very grateful to have that information. My surgeon has done over 500 of them and sounds like the right guy for the job.
If anyone could share their 6-12 month status with me, I would appreciate it. It sounds like afterwards I'll never sit down and devour a big meal again, I'll have to chew more and I'll have to eat slower. I can live with that.
I'm interested if most people find after 6-12 months that it's basically business as usual, or if there are still some significant life compromises in the long term? I enjoy a steak and I like to have a couple of beers on a sunny afternoon fishing. I can give that up for a year, but I don't want to give it up for 30 years.
So here are a few specific questions, I would really love if people could share their experiences -
-Is the gas pain still bad after 6-12 months with certain foods or drinks?
-Can you eat almost all foods/drinks after 6-12 months?
-Can you drink after 6-12 months?
If anyone else is in a similar boat to me, but had the surgery, I'd love to hear their views.
Thanks to this great community. When I likely go ahead with it, I'll will share my experience.
