5 months ago i was supposedly diagnosed with anxiety because i suddenly had a difficulty breathing.  which made me have gerd.  i was put on aciphex and i guess its okay.  yet, why does gerd/anxiety makes us feel short of breath, tightness in the throat, feels like theres stuff at the end of your throat, and the feeling of chest pains???  like i never knew that stomach problems can lead to this kinda stuff.  today i went to eat at souplantation, and i guess i ate a little too much and now my throat suddenly feels really tight and that theres like flem or something at the end of my throat.  like whats going on??? im only 18 and i feel like this gerd/anxiety is taking over my life!!!

Nikool, lots of people have anxiety probs -- including yours truly.  Please be aware, however, that this doesn't invalidate what sound like very real PHYSICAL issues you are having.  Unfortunately, many docs (although not all) choose the easy route of attributing patients' symptoms to anxiety.  Like a friend of mine who went into the ER for chest pains.  She was told it was just anxiety until she demanded more tests, which showed that she indeed had a condition.  I believe doctors are more ready to diagnose (especially young) females with "just anxiety."  One time I had a (not to be gross) urinary tract problem that caused me to have to pee and pee and pee.  A doctor told me I was anxious, but further testing showed that I had a benign cyst that was removed.  When a doctor tells you it's just anxiety, I suggest you stand your ground and keep coming back to the PHYSICAL SYMPTOMS you are having.  You (or your parents) are paying your physicians to treat you.  You are their client, so it's your responsibility and right to respect their advice but take control of your treatment.  Are you in counseling with a psychotherapist?  It really helps.  Even someone w/ no prior anxiety issues would naturally feel overwhelmed by having GERD, so maybe look into it.

By the way, I don't know if you've been diagnosed with a hiatal hernia like some people with GERD.  Many alternative medicine practitioners will tell you that hiatal hernias can precipitate anxiety attacks.  Best of luck to ya.

Hi Nikool, With my experience with this it's a bit like which came first? The chicken or the egg. Laura is right it is so easy to pass off ailments with the diagnosis that you are having anxiety, but when you wake up in the night or are awake in the middle of the day and all of a sudden you feel like you can't breathe, swallow and something is strangling you, it's like hello I think you are going to have panic issues. I actually worry about letting the GP know this is causing me panic because of that reason. They just seem to zoom straight into the oh you are having anxiety. I see.

My adivce to you would be, get the tests done. As far as the panic issues go, it is natural to feel like this when you have these sort of symptoms happening, I would get to see someone who can teach you some kind of relaxation.

Take care, hope you are feeling better soon

hello everyone! i am new to this forum and i never realized how much gerd and anxiety were related.  i went to a gi about 8 mths ago with all indigestion issues and he told me it was just anxiety so i was able to cope with it and got better for a month or so.  since then my stomach issues are back with chronis heartburn, chest pain, shortness of breath, constant belching, palpitations and i realized it wasnt just anxiety.  i just went for an upper gi today and i am waiting on the results.  do a lot of you have anxiety due to gerd?

My anxiety was caused by gerd.  My former doctor put me on a med for gerd (aciphex) and it didnt work so he ordered more tests(after i demanded) and all the test confermed gerd.  After 5 weeks of trying aciphex it still had very little effect on me but my gerd was getting so bad i started haveing panick attacks and thinking i was having a heart attack.  He refused to change my med so i changed doctors my new doctor put me on prevacid and after two days my heartburn was gone.  But i was still having anxiety so my new doctor put me on a med to help me with that also.  But im feeling better.  Talk to your doctor and if you dont like the answer then go to another doctor.

Hi Khatiza,
First of it is a really old thread you have responded to. You should create a new one instead and people will respond to that one instead.

I too have had anxiety due to GERD and almost weekly panic attacks. It was only until my doctor prescribed PPI's twice a day it got better. I have recently had an operation for the GERD part but still suffer from the tightness in the throat, mucous, hoarseness and constant clearing of my throat. It should get better after sometime, I am crossing my fingers

The only thing you can do now is to see a doctor and start the trip towards getting diagnosed. For me it took a year before I got the right amount of meds to be relieved enough to lead a somewhat proper life. I hope you get there faster.

For now you could try to treat it like GERD and eat smaller meals but more often. Don’t eat 4 – 5 hours before bedtime and sleep “elavated” to keep the stuff in your stomach at night. For me it helped on the attacks knowing what they were. You just need to help your body understand that you are not being choked, you are not dying and if you wait it out for an hour it will get better.

I wish you luck getting diagnosed!
