Hi,

I was diagnosed with Barrett's esophagus without displasia and would like to have the Radio Frequency Ablation (RFA) procedure to have it removed. I am also a PCA survivor with adverse pathology and don't want to risk a second cancer.

Has anyone had this procedure done ? And would they recommend the surgeon ? Or know of a surgeon who does this operation that is good ? I live in San Diego area and am ok with out of the area recommendations too.

Any feedback procedure and recovery time would be great to hear also ?

I was also told I have a moderate hiatal hernia and would probably also like to get this taken care of at the same time.

I have not had a gerd/reflux experience in 18 months during which I lost 50 pounds. This put me in in the mid-180s on a 6 foot frame so I'm hoping the cause of Barrett's is gone.

thanks

You're lucky the Barrett's was caught early. Mine wasn't and I had high grade dysplasia which has scared me half to death. I go to a specialist at one of the large teaching hospitals in Cleveland. My local GI doctor referred me because he felt my problems were outside his area of expertise. I'm scheduled for surgery the end of the month so I'm still feeling like a normal person.

I asked about an ablation and they said the hernia surgery was more important since it was causing the silent reflux. After that they will closely monitor the Barrett's. The dysplasia was removed with a mucosal resection. The good news is both my local GI doc and the specialist describe my prognosis as "Excellent" and "Fantastic". I'm assuming they think they have the upper hand over any cancer.
