I had a challenging year health wise and am finally feeling good again and want to let anybody who may be going through the same thing know there is hope! In March, I came down with such severe GERD. I could barely eat and lost 15 pounds in 10 days, making me feel like a skeleton. I could barely sleep because all I could feel was stuff coming up in my throat. I also had burping and intermittent intense neck constriction/tightness. I was in constant agony and pain. I was at the doctors, urgent care, and ER multiple times. An endoscopy diagnosed me with GERD and mild gastritis, as well as a potential tiny hernia. I followed a GERD friendly diet and started a PPI. I started to feel good for a week or so and then felt really bad again. I developed burning throat and felt like I had a lump in my throat. I constantly felt like I had to spit up even though only saliva really came out. I cycled through 3 PPIs and went on max dosages of them. Nexium was the only one that helped me. I also was started on celexa because I was so anxious and depressed from constantly feeling terrible. 2-3 weeks later I started to see some relief. After having multiple tests, I was diagnosed with hypersensitive esophagus. It turns out I felt better on celexa because it actually treats this condition by acting as a neuromodulator. Eventually though I needed something else. I didn’t have a good reaction to amitriptyline and then tried Trazadone. 8 months later, with celexa, trazadone and 20mg of nexium daily I can finally say I’m feeling the best I’ve felt since getting sick. The only symptom I still feel is mild burping but these medications have really helped my symptoms. I highly recommend finding a really good doctor and getting the right tests done. I had to go to a top GI hospital to finally find a good GI doctor who understood this condition well. I was very hopeless at times and want you to know there is hope and it will get better!

Hey Chloe I watched your post, sir im too suffering from gerd from 31 October after that I took mild medicines to overcome but it got intense from 8th November as I started feeling lump andd swelling or obstruction while swallowing under my Adams apple. After this I. Went to ent doctor he told me to do video laryngoscopy and the report was normal. He referred me to gi doc and when I met him he told me to do endoscopy blood test and my endoscopy report told lax les, corporal gastritis. He gave me medication and when I asked him about this inflammation he told me that it will go within 2 weeks but after 2 weeks there was no change and now on 1 Dec I come to my hometown here I went to senior gi doc he is giving me nexium and asked me to meet in middle of this month and now one and a half month over swelling is still there. Plz give me some advice what to do. I am very afraid that if it is any big problem or life long problem. And my old gi doc also told me to do USG of neck but I don't find any problem in neck. Plz give me some advice what that swelling is and how much time it will take to treat and any suggestions also.
Thank you in advance

Hi, thanks for the post. I hope I could find a good doctor in the Philippines :'( I feel so anxious too :'( I thought burping/belching is just normal and it will go away. But it didn't. I hope I could find a cure in my country. This bothers me. But anyway, thank you for the post and for giving us hope.

My bad reaction to amytryptiline was significant bladder pain that felt like a bad UTI. I tend to be hypersensitive to medications so I think it is an uncommon side effect. Devaa- I am not sure on your exact problem but I’m sure there is a way to make it better. I would seek another opinion of an ENT. There can be a big difference between doctors I’ve learned. You have to make sure you find one that is very smart and can figure out what is wrong so they can help you. You’ll know when you find the right one. Don’t give up though! I felt very discouraged for awhile and my doctor has been helping me find the right medications to make me feel better.

HI, I had my checkup last week and the doctor didn't really talk to me and it upsets me a little. She only gave me some pills to take for 2 weeks :'( after taking the pills for 4 days, I felt that it had worsened my condition. I talked with another doctor and she wants to give me another pill for my GERD and gave additional pills. I really don't trust doctors nowadays. I feel like they just want to make money out of their patients. huhu So, I did continue with my research on how to get rid of this GERD and I found a very useful video from my own country. I looked at the comments and their testimonials. The doctor said one of the most effective medicine to our stomach problem is by eating a banana. This cures acid in our body. Of course, change of lifestyle is needed and most especially with our diet. I don't drink soda, liquor or coffee, and I don't smoke I just need to change my lifestyle and diet. Also, doing yoga and staying active would contribute a lot smile I hope I'll get better soon by doing these things that I found out! Good thing, my country has plenty of bananas smile

Thanks a lot Chloe for your reply. Sir actually I am showing myself to the best doctor of my city having 45 year experience and I have told him he is just saying me that to take medication such as necxium 40mg and I told him that I am taking them regularly but not that much good result is coming and now he has increased my dose and has told me that this lump will take some time and told me to remove anxiety from my mind. But this anxiety is not going bcoz everyday I feel this lump and I always become anxious that what is there and now I am waiting for another 2 weeks if these symptoms don't go then I will ask him to do reendoscopy but can you tell me about this hypersensitive esophagus and with that also you were feeling lump and difficulty swallowing and how do you diagnose it. Plz reply I will really appreciate

Hi. I have experienced the lump in your throat sensation and I know how bothersome that can be. The way I got it diagnosed was with a 24 hour ph test with a probe. They left a tube down my throat to monitor how much I was actually refluxing. It turns out my reflux was quite low even though I had symptoms such as excessive burping, lump in throat, feeling reflux, heartburn, etc. This is the only way to accurately diagnose reflux vs hypersensitivity. If it is hypersensitivity, then the protocol is to put someone on some type of nerve medication.

Ohk this will be over by medications no bcoz actually I am also in tension that I will again have to do endoscopy and it is really hard test and so I will give it some more time if it will not go then I will refer to pH test. And please tell me that now you are feeling completely good or still you are feeling lump bcoz everyday I feel that I have to get a surgery done to remove it. Thanks a lot sir for your precious time.

Hi Devaa. I have had my ups and downs but am feeling way better than when this first came on. I’m actually about to change medications again as my doctor thinks a different one will give me more relief from it. But I feel much better where it is barely noticeable most of the time. Hang in there!

Thanks sir for your reply, now it's been nearly 2 months completed and now still as I have told you lump feeling is there and swallowing problem but just I am waiting for time to go and when I will get fully back normal. I have seen your case sir that you have also gone from that phase and anxiety and same in my case anxiety level is very high. And as you told that doctor should be good so for that I have consulted best doctor of city he is just saying that my endoscopy has gastritis and lax les no further prob and ent doc told me from video laryngoscopy that throat is normal. So I am quite but sir I want you to suggest me that if other than these whether I should get any other test done thank you sir for your patience and as you told that it took 8 months for you to get completely good and since you have seen my case can you still tell me if possible that how much time it will take for me to get completely normal. I really appreciate your precious time.

Chloe,

It’s been a while since your post. How have you been feeling? Were you ever able to get off your meds?

I’m writing because I’ve been struggling through a virtually identical experience. It’s been almost a year of doctor visits, endoscopy, and ct scan included, to get to this point. I’m currently taking 40mg protonix (PPI) in the morning, 150mg Zantac at night, and 10 mg amitriptylin each night. After a couple weeks the amitriptylin seemed to have a positive affect on my symptoms. However, I still have minor symptoms and a rough bout with the pain about once a week or so. One of the few triggers I’ve identified is exercise such as lifting weights or even a slightly more strenuous cardio exercise. Each time I go to the gym, I’m cursed with about a week of deep esophageal and chest aches. It’s unreal. I’m curious if you have the same trigger and/or if you were able to exercise much since having the condition? I’ve been a life long gym rat, so this condition really affected my sense of identity due to a large about of muscle loss. I dropped 25 pounds and my family and friends have raised concerns about my health. Thank you for any experience you can share.

Hi Chloe, I really glad to hear you found a solution! I’ve been going the same thing myself. It started 6 months ago, I have a feeling of a lump in my throat, water brash that chock me, heartburn, shortness of breath, bleaching, sore throat, and bloating. It’s like hell! I’ve been doing 2 normal endoscopy, normal ph monitoring, and esophagus manomatry which indicated that my LES is ok (No GERD) but I have unspecific ineffective esophagus motility which I guess it’s hypersensitive as I read your comment. I had anxiety and depression myself and I’ve been on 100 mg Zoloft (Sertalin) I feel better than before but still have all the symptoms. After a lot of research i found out that the antidepressant are being used to treat these kinds of functional diseases. I would like to know after your experience with Celexa if you recommend me to change pills or maybe I should increase my dosage of Zoloft since the maximum is 200. Also, what was your Celexa dosage? IThanks!! Also, Matt I see your comment if you found and solution I would be glad if you can reach out, thanks.

You are responding to someone that hasn't been active on this Board in over three years, so you probably won't get a response from her. Also, we aren't medical professionals on these Forums - so no one should really advise you regarding your medication and dosages other than your medical professionals.
