I had my Nissan Fundoplication with a 3cm hiatal hernia repair in December 2018 and I have done really great from the beginning with no acid reflux problems at all. We went on vacation and I introduced a few new foods including one that was a bit spicy which I had not tried at all up until 3 months after my surgery and 2 beers which I hadn't had before this. I ate ALOT more than I was used to eating at a meal and I will say my biggest challenge so far, is trying to learn to take small bites and slow down. I have always been a fast eater. One night, I overate and I started feeling really nauseous to the point where I had gagged a few times ending up in the bathroom with diarrhea. That wasn't fun!
Then for the next few days every time I ate anything I felt nauseous until the food left my stomach and then I would feel better but I started getting heartburn feeling and I have continued to have it most days for over a week now quite often really no matter what I eat. If I drink Malox or milk it seems to help but then when I eat again it will come back. I stopped feeling nauseas, thank god, but the heartburn feeling seems to persist. I am really worried that something has gone wrong!
If I eat too fast or especially with any meat or breads, I will get the sensation of food getting stuck and then it will go down but it puts a pain in my chest and I get anxiety when this happens until it passes on down through the wrap. It is just something I feel we have to be aware of and stay away from the things that are hard to swallow. Also I notice I burp little burps a lot more than I used too since this problem started up. I have been able to burp which are just in my esophagus and not from the stomach I feel like, from the beginning after surgery, which the doctor said was good. But the heartburn/acid reflux is a new symptoms since I had the surgery and it has me concerned other than, the first week after surgery I would get this feeling of heartburn but it went away. It almost feels the same way as I did the first week. I made an appt to go see the Dr. on April 11. I also am going through stress right now which I know doesn't help. My husband lost his job of 38 years so that is hard.
Has anyone else had these problems 3 months post op? I am concerned that this heartburn feeling is here to stay again, and I was feeling so good and it has me worried:
I started taking Ranitidine again yesterday as I was thinking perhaps my stomach lining got inflamed with the new foods/beer and was hoping it may calm things down. Please let me know if anyone has experienced these symptoms post op! I appreciate this forum SO much!
