I have been suffering from GERDS and have a Hiatal Hernia as well for a number of years as I know most people suffering from Acid Reflux are being disgnosed with. I also had Barretts at one point, but at my last Endoscopy my Gastro Doctor told me all was well. I am due for another as soon as they start to see patients again. What I have learned in the last few years and what almost everyone I read about who have GERDS/Hiatal hernia complains about is "Heart Palpitation" symptoms, and I have the same problem (rapid breathing) and also did the monitor etc. but my heart is just fine. I have seen Specialists for this and that, and I had trouble with digestion during the period i had Barretts, but they never found anything wrong with me, and nobody ever told me it was because of these "Gut conditions" that I had these issues, so I felt compelled to share what I have learned about these "side effects" in case I can help someone figure things out as well! I recently talked to a person who was an O.R Nurse for over 30 years and she told me it is pressure from bloating/gas that presses on the Vegus Nerve, so look it up and read about it it will help you understand what is happening. I have also discovered that eating raw Ginger (learned from a Doctor) is as good as taking pills, but it is very very strong, so you have to be dedicated in order to do it. I have tried to find out dosages but what I read on the Internet is far too little an amount and I have been eating over a hundred times more than that amount every day for about 5-6 months, but have since reduced the amount I take and supplement with a Pepcid before bedtime or during the night when I am awaken by the "rapid breathing" symptoms in which case I am unable to sleep, until I take one of these things. If you watch what you eat and drink especially alcohol and especially Wine, you should be able to get away with just 1 pcs. of Ginger or 1 pill a day or one of each, but if not you will find you have to take it several times a day (Ginger) there are other natural things that does give some relief and you can find a lot of info. on the Net on that too. I have started drinking Lactose Fat Free Milk and that helps too. I tried to make Ginger Tea but it seem to make things worse for me at least, so Raw is best for me and works within minutes.(peel with a spoon, works great) and experiment with how much you need to make it work for you (depending on severity of reflux). I also had a lot of Bloating and Gas and then I heard about Aloe Juice (Bi-Mart, Walmart & Trader Joe's) you can buy a Gallon these places and you take 4 oz for the first month and then 2 oz after that. It works great for settling the stomach and I feel a lot better when I drink that. I started drinking in the evening but then switched to morning, as you should eat something not too long after you drink it. You drink 15 min. before anything else and then I drink a glass of water and not only does it settle your gut but it also keeps you regular, it literally "purges" your stomach. Every now and then I take a break for about a week or so as it is always advisable to do so with all supplements. There are a lot of info. about Aloe on the Net also, but most of that is for "pure" Aloe that you i.e. extract from the Plant or buy. There is a warning for people who take blood thinners so make sure you read about that and also if you are going in for Surgery you need to stop a few weeks before. They also mention a warning to people with Hemorrhoids but again I don't know if that warning is directed mostly for people taking the pure form of Aloe or what! I am going to talk to my Gastro guy about that very thing when I see him since I have Roids and am also prone to Colon cancer. I discovered that I am not allergic to Wheat but I do have Gluten intolerance and especially anything Processed will immediately give me Acid Reflux, so Bread or packaged Cake mixes etc.are not good for this problem. During the time I had Barretts I tried to abstain from Alcohol and all the foods they give you a list over causing Reflux but it is simply impossible to do, although I was very very careful and tried very hard to be "good" most of the time. Do your best, ,pick your "poisons" and try not to overdo anything, that is what does it. If I only have one drink a day I am fine it is when you mix with foods that causes reflux and drink in excess that you will have a problem! I also discovered drops and stir sticks you put in wine that will remove the Sulfides so you can tolerate the wine better (Amazon). Hope this helps someone feel better, cause we are supposedly "married" to this problem for life, although when you watch what you eat and drink you can almost forget that there is a problem. I would also suggest you check out Colloidal Silver and the benefits you might find from that. (was used before Antibiotics was invented) I am researching this very thing right now and have bought several bottles of it, but have no experience with taking it over a longer period so far, you can take it short term or long term depending what you need it for (can cure i.e. Parvo in Dogs as well, and use on animals with various infections. Read reviews on Amazon and there are also many positive reviews on WebMD that all despute the warning you might see on the Internet, it is done to try (Big Pharma) and prevent too many people from discovering this great product that can help with many issues. Make sure the product are PURE that is the most important thing. Let me know if you want more info. and I will help if I can answer your questions, but it's always best to do your own research as we all are different and respond differently to anything we take! Good Luck!
