I has laproscopic Nissan Wrap surgery in Oct 2004.
In Oct 2005, I was diagnosed with Wernicke encephalopathy.
I had been lossing weight rapidly and had no appetite. I was not getting any B1 and over a period of 10 weeks
got progressively worse until I had to be hospitalized in ICU for 8 days and then more days in a regular room.
This Wernicke's syndrome usually only affects alcoholics due to their poor nutrition, but I do not drink at all.
Researchers have resently found this can happen to patients who have had stomach surgery for weigth loss.
The symptoms are mild to extreme confusion, amnesia, muscle weakness, nausea.
Has anyone know of someone esle who had this GERD surgery and this complication.
The reason I ask is that one side affect is that I have no memory at all of Sept. & Oct. 2005.
My understanding is that mental confusion from this syndrome can reoccur for up to a year after hospitalization.
I am 43 and it is very scary to not know what day of the week is or can't think of a word I know I should know but can't remember. Anyone with more information would be greatly appreciated
