This is such a helpful board, such kind caring people. I really need some help understanding all the things I keep reading about gastritis. I'll give some background first - I had acute gastritis back in 2008 from taking baby aspirin (under doctor advice but it wasn't coated to protect stomach). It was gone in 6 weeks. I was fine for 9 years and had a second acute attack in 2017 from Advil. That too cleared up in 4-6 weeks. I didn't take anything either time as I've read that taking anti-acid medication causes all kinds of problems with low stomach acid and that causes problems in the small intestine with digesting food. But I healed just fine both times and no problems after. Well. Fast forward to spring of this year and I suddenly start having gastritis symptoms again - nausea after eating, bloated, etc., feeling just awful. Because the two previous times there was an obvious cause, I didn't know why I had it again. And it was different too - the first two times, it was like I went to bed the night before feeling fine, woke up the next day feeling like I wanted to die, it was that sudden. Both times. This time it's been a gradual sick, where I get a day when I feel perfectly normal (like yesterday), and then the next day I feel absolutely awful (like today). I know this is what they call chronic gastritis, which is worse, and the only thing I can think of that may have triggered it is, I started drinking coffee again last year after not drinking it for the last 10 years, and I'm pretty sure that caused some inflammation I wasn't aware of. Now you throw in Covid-19 and the sheer panic and stress that's been causing me, and I'm thinking I just found my two triggers. I did stop drinking coffee before this started but it had probably already caused some problems that the virus fear just made worse. I think this started right after the virus hit us in March, I think maybe April? I would have never thought that stress could actually do something like this to a person, but I know if I went to a doctor and he asked how long I've had this, and I said since April.....yeah, he's gonna put two and two together. Anyway, I've been reading lots of information about how to treat it, what to eat or not eat, I just want it to go away. And everything I read says that the anti-acid medications (PPI's) are the worst thing you can take as they stop the production of stomach acid, or lower it quite a bit, and you need your stomach acid to digest your food, says they don't really do anything for healing it, and if anything they make it worse and set you up for SIBO, which is harder to get rid of than gastritis. Does anyone on here know anything about this? I got so confused reading conflicting information that I don't know what to do. I take Pepto Bismol quite a bit as that seems to help my stomach more than anything, but then I think, well that coats my stomach and slows down my stomach acid, so do I take it....do I not take it......or am I making it worse by not taking anything at all? I'm so confused right now and so tired of continually feeling bad that I just need to talk to people who are actually going thru this too, and not just reading a bunch of conflicting articles online. I would be so very grateful for any help or information you guys can share.
