Hello all,

about two years ago, I was doing a cleanse and I ended up throwing up extremely heavily two nights( I know and wish I didn’t do it)

I first noticed a tightening feeling around my throat which then turned into full globus sensation. Went to three ENT all did scopes and said LPR. Went to Dr Kaufman recently in NYC and she also said LPR and put me on strict diet no spices etc..I have been doing this for two months now. I do feel slight improvement but am still having this feeling of mucus In my throat . That’s my main symptom and just feels like I have to constantly clear throat. When I am eating , sensation is gone completely. Unrelated I also recently started getting tension headaches I think from stress.

PPIs never worked even strong ones.

Is there any chance Elavil could work for the mucus sensation clearing throat? Thank you for any advice .
I am sorry for all dealing with this.

No burning
No cough
No heartburn (never had this ever)

Only globus and having to constantly feel Like mucus Needs to be cleared. Also it’s usually gone in the morning.

The problem is with starting elevil is that your body adjusts to the levels and a increase in elevil Is constantly needed to have any effect. Elevil is considered class 2 , controlled substance And mood enhancer. In my experience it helped me sleep took med at night. Not taking elevil now as it stopped working after time.
Of course everyone is different and the drugs effects are different for everyone.
It might help acid reflux to take OTC acid reducer medication one pill in the morning can last all day and night.

The number 1 cause of heart burn are carbonated drinks. The carbonation creates air bubbles in the stomach causing the bloating and pressure/pain as acid rises in the stomach up the esophagus.

Thanks for your reply. I am on strict diet no spices. Basically dr Kouffman (dropping acid) diet. Thing with me is I never ever had reflux or heartburn in my life. I vomited very hard two nights and it started after this. No heartburn symptom. Only the globus feeling and throat clearing extra mucus....I take Pepcid before meals as per doctor as well..it just seems crazy this all started almost two years ago from vomiting...I was thinking maybe the elavil would help but I don’t know...just looking for some help...i read many have it worse and I feel for them but this is extremely annoying for me everyday sad feels like I have mucus stuck all the time. Chewing mastic gum seems to help a bit and whenever I’m eating it’s gone completely.

Elavil has been prescribed for GERD for years. You can find many posts in the archives (the search box at the top of the page). Whether it works may depend on the cause of the condition.

You might try just thinning your mucus. Avoid milk and milk products. Take Mucinex or other OTC guaifenesin products. I like the 12 hour ones, especially at night in the allergy season.

Unless you have a valve problem letting in acid or a hiatal hernia big enough to cause difficulty, I would avoid acid reducers. You said you don't have heartburn. That "cleanse" you did causing you to vomit excessively could just possibly have caused a hernia. Only your doctor can check this out.

I have been struggling with Gerd this year myself. I also had strange vomiting 2 years ago but at that time I thought I had food poisoning but I didn't have diarrhea so I suspected I ate some home made hard biscuits from the fridge. It was hard and rough and I didn't chew properly and it might have scratched my throat. After the two day vomiting, i ate soft food for a week and went back to normal life. Then late last year I started to have slight difficulty swallowing and feel a lump in my throat. Then I had very sore throat. Lost my voice at times. Had a bad cold. Yellow mucus. Had antibiotics intravenously(bad mistake now that I look back. It may have disrupted my microbiome balance). Had chewed raw garlic when I had sore throat. Another bad mistake looking back as I didn't know I had silent reflux for quite a few years: sore throat and hoarse throat often, loss of voice sometimes, lots of mucus at the back my throat and blocked nose but no heartburn or any obvious reflux symptoms. I went to see a GP and was told I had reflux. Surprised. I stopped garlic, onion, tomatoes, mint, citrus fruits. Took somac for some time. Condition improved. However it was before Christmas. During Christmas we had relatives from overseas, I had some greasy food and cheese and started to have bad reflux, excessive saliva, belch often. I started to have a lot of yoghurt and kefir. Too much still no good. I have all sorts of fermented food. Recently I started to feel bloated easily just because I ate too much broccoli or kale. I never feel bloated that badly before as I always eat a lot of vegetables and fruits but then I didn't eat only broccoli or kale all day without other carbs. When you mentioned doing a cleanse, i suspect you ate a lot of high firbre vegetables without carbs and it may cause you to bloat with a lot of gas inside and the excessive gas may push open the LES the lower esophageal sphincter and the stomach acid leaks out. That's one of the theories I have read about and I think it may sense. I have been experimenting different diets and I think a balanced diet is good. We can't avoid starch food altogether. I am still struggling to get into a routine and I still eat the wrong food sometimes and eat too much when I feel very hungry after skipping meals. Time to learn how to endure hunger now if I want to beat Gerd I guess and maintain small portions (i am never overweight by the way. I am always on relatively healthy diet so sometimes I feel life is not fair why I have Gerd but still.) Happy to find this forum. We just have to persevere to fight Gerd

RefluxMythExplorer2020:

I suggest that you start your own thread since you are responding to a thread regarding Elavil, which really has nothing to do with your post. You are more likely to get responses to your own thread with a title that describes your question, although I must warn you that the Boards are extremely slow. I did respond to your post responding to a thread about sphincter pressure. Also, you might want to take a look at the pinned topic - GERD Resources and Treatment Options at the top of this Section. There is a lot of helpful information there, as well as other member's experiences that may be similar to yours. Also, please feel free to use the search box for specific topics.
