I hope this is not true but fear it is so.

I depend on Gaviscon Regular Tablets for my quality of life. For weeks and weeks now all supplies have dried up. Once in a great while a bottle or two is sold on eBay at outrageous prices. I just paid $40 for a bottle that should sell at no more than $12. The price gougers are out. Amazon has not had it for a couple months. Offline places all dried up almost a year ago. Even Walmarts never has it.

One eBay seller titled his ad that it was discontinued. Wow. For decades, over 30 years I think, this has been the ONLY ONLY drug that helps my acid reflux. Extra will not work for me at all. Nothing else will work and I believe I have tried all possibilities.

Does anyone have any sort of information to share. Is this "just" a COVID -related problem. Or will it go onward with never the drug reappearing? I have about 15 bottles now but I can't meet the price gougers any further. Without this drug I am sick all the time basically. With it, fine and healthy.

NeilS:

Have you tried checking Amazon? You could also contact the manufacturer and hope for a response. Sometimes it a case of reformatting the packaging. I wish you luck in finding them without paying for them on Ebay. Hopefully, someone will come along with some additional information.

Amazon and all suppliers there seem to no longer offer this for at least the past four or five months. I think what is happening is private individuals on eBay have decided to sell their own unopened ones as they can quadruple their money, The manufacturer has not responded. The last stuff on eBay carried expiration dates of 12/31/20. So, that also seems to indicate that perhaps the manufacturer has discontinued this. I do not know why but they have ALWAYS been loath to sell this. I hypothesize they make more money on the Extra than the Regular. At any rate, in my whole life I have seen it in brick and mortar stores unordered by me only maybe six times. It was always touch and go ordering through a pharmacy as almost no local reps stocked it. Now none of the pharmacies in the tri-state area can even order it. I have tried maybe a random 20 in NYS, Connecticut and NJ. All the same. They are happy to take an order for a few dozen and unable to fulfill even one bottle.

Thanks anyway but that is the UK formulation which is entirely different. The one I am looking for is in a bottle like the US extra but has a blue cap instead of a red one. The formulation is: dried aluminum hydroxide gel 80mg, magnesium trisilicate 14.2 mg. As far as I can determine after ordering from the UK, India, Australia, Japan and other countries ONLY the US formula is the stuff I am searching to find. None of the others have the aluminum hydroxide.

NeilS, have you looked at the ingredients of Mylanta, Maalox, Gelusil and the generic antacids from various drugstore chains?

I have tried most or all. The problem seems to be that the Gaviscon is primarily GERD and secondarily an antacid. The other stuff reverses that or even non-prioritzes GERD treatment completely. But, maybe it is time to visit Amazon and try an assortment again.

I'm sure the answer is yes, but have you tried Sucralfate?

no that is a new one for me. Is that a brand name?

Just went to Amazon and then Googled. I do not see this as an option for me. First, finding it on Amazon seemed very difficult in that not one item that came up carried the ingredient for which I was searching. Then Drugs.com seemed to 1) say it was prescription and so would hardly be found on a search of OTC remedies and 2) only used to treat active duodenal ulcers and no mention of either anti-reflux or antacid abilities even in various online discussions of using it off-prescription use.

Soooo, does not sound like it would be an option for me?

PS: Latest price on eBay for one bottle of Gaviscon Regular tablets (100) is up to $89/95!!!!

No, it's a prescription used for coating the stomach (it's liquid) and is used for GERD patients. It also is sold under the name Carafate It is used primarily for treating ulcers, but also used for GERD. It might be worth getting a script from your doctor to try. Many members here have gotten relief by using it.
