I was wondering if anyone else had issues when recovering from hiatal hernia surgery and nissen fundiplication. Im 27 years old and just got the surgery done and am actually sitting in my hospital bed now. Its been about 11 hrs since the surgery. I get bad hiccups that last about 30 minutes, sometimes more. Also when I try to swallow anything more than a Tiny sip of water, i get a super heightened sense of something being stuck, and immediately my body try's to throw up (which I obviously cant) so i just dry heave for a bit then the hiccups go away. Its super painful, and i just want to sleep sad anyone have anything similar?

John:

Usually the hiccups are a reaction to the anesthetic, and will resolve itself. You are in the hospital, ask the nurse for an anti-nausea pill. This is something that your surgeon should prescribe for you, you may need it in the future. Relax, you just had major abdominal surgery. Talk to your surgeon about your concerns.
