You are correct, it takes longer than most people would expect as it is major abdominal surgery. For me, it took 6 months until I felt much better and one year until I felt like the "new" me and you can expect small setbacks along the way. If your surgeon didn't give you a diet to follow, check out the UPMC Post-Nissen diet - it 's listed under the pinned topic GERD Resources and Treatment Options at the top of this Forum - and the one that I used. There are quite a few people that need to temporarily resume PPIs after surgery and it seems to work well for them. You might try taking a Pepcid at bedtime for faster relief. Also, make sure that they prescribe an anti-nausea medication (Zofran) - it's something that I occasionally need five years after surgery. I had a full wrap and my surgeon discussed with me prior to surgery that I would no longer belch like I had in the past and that I would lose the ability to vomit, and that hasn't bothered me at all.
