I'm a 31 year old male living in the UK. I am 170cm and 64kg in weight.
I have had lots of problems with acid reflux and oesophagitis for years, worsening over the last 3 years. I have had 2 endoscopies, which revealed a 4cm sliding Hiatus Hernia and moderate oesophagitis. Since then, I have been taking 20mg of Omeprazole per day. This controlled the acid but my principal symptoms remained as: frequent burps and regurgitation of food and drink. In addition, and probably my most bothersome symptom, was frequent hiccups, especially after eating. My surgeon and gastroenterologist both put the hiccups down to the hiatus hernia. These worsen when moving around.
In the work-up to surgery I had manometry, 24 hour pH test and a Barium swallow, which all correlated with poor lower oesophageal sphincter function and reflux. The Upper GI surgeon taking all of these results into account suggested I be listed for surgery.
So on 22nd April 2021 I had the Nissen Fundoplication. At the time of surgery I had the hiatus hernia repaired and a full/360 wrap. The last 2 1/2 weeks have been a whirlwind to say the least. I stayed in hospital for 1 night and was on sips of water only for the first 24 hours, then progressing to liquid diet. I have been taking liquid medications for pain relief and laxatives to prevent straining. I have been super careful not to lift anything heavy. I am not really needing to take the pain relief any longer.
So as not to bore you, my current concerns are as follows:
-the first 10 days were generally ok. However since about 14 days (2 weeks) post-op I feel my symptoms have changed/worsened.
-I have developed this weird gurgly sound in my throat about 10 seconds after swallowing, is this normal? Before this the gurgly sounds were just coming from my tummy but it seems to have changed to my throat now.
-I am still only managing very liquidy/puree textures comfortably, mashable textures are too difficulty and feel like they get stuck. I am also feeling full very quickly.
-I am still getting frequent hiccups, this is ever since day 1 post-surgery which I am very disappointed about as I really thought the surgery would stop the hiccuping.
-I find that after a few sips of water or a few spoons of soup even I have these hiccups which give me some relief from the bloat. I also have these occasional tiny little burps that aren't audible but I can feel them. I usually have about 3-4 hiccups and then it stops again.
-Reassuringly I don't think I have had any reflux or regurgitation since I have had the surgery and I am off the PPI.
I feel completely alone with all of this as I don't really have anyone to talk to who has had this surgery and I am not due to see my surgeon for review until 8th June. If anyone can share any similar experiences to mind, it would be much appreciated. If these symptoms sound abnormal I would be keen to contact my surgeon sooner.
