Totally agree with Sharon. Why would a surgeon recommend major surgery when your scopes did not show any real esophageal damage? IMO, that seems a bit extreme, especially as you have just started seeking treatment for your reflux issues. "Pump the brakes" and at least first check out some of the less invasive alternatives/therapies, especially dietary changes. If you have not already, look at some of the pioneering work by two reflux experts, Drs. Jonathan Aviv and Jamie Koufman, which I found really helpful.
In my case: I had been on Pantoprazole (generic Protonix) for years for reflux and EoE. Was working fine until a few months ago when symptoms reemerged. After switching to Nexium, my symptoms went back to being in control. So, yes, it is possible for different PPIs to work better than others.
