I've suffered from some digestive issues for several years including ulcerative colitis and a hiatal hernia. The hernia only really caused me some minor reflux in years past.

Recently, I've had several episodes that I chalked up to anxiety attacks but have noticed that they also seem to coincide with periods of belching and a heaviness/pressure in the pit of my chest that is very similar to the feeling I get when I'm startled by something...sort of like an "uh oh" feeling that hangs around all day. I also get pain in my back between the shoulder blades and extreme fatigue. I will wake up early in the morning with extreme anxiety and will shiver for several minutes and belch often.

Do hiatal hernia attacks trigger anxiety for others? I have been wondering if these periods of odd sensations in my chest are not pure anxiety but a reaction to hernia flare up and pressure in my chest cavity mimicking fear/anxiety response? Chicken/egg thing. Seems to last for 3-4 days then poof, gone. Really no anxiety outside of these short episodes where I burp a lot too. Anxiety and digestion very closely connected for me as I've found with my colitis flare ups.

I've not experienced the same symtpoms as you, but that doesn't mean that they are not related. Depending on the size of the hernia, a lot of people have no symptoms and don't realize that they have one. You can try following a GERD-friendly diet, in addition to taking a Pepcid at bedtime, but my suggestion would be to schedule an appointment with your PCP.
