Hi Everyone,

I am new to this board and could really use some help.  I was diagnosed with GERD after an upper endoscopy in September after having months of trouble swallowing (food was getting stuck in my throat).  I occasionally had acid back up in my throat if I ate late at night but no other symptoms.

I was prescribed Nexium once a day.  Since the time of endoscopy and diagnosis, my swallowing is okay now and I don't have any acid but I do have horrible stomach discomfort and chest pains and headaches.  My stomach discomfort is so uncomfortable that I can't wear a bra.  Any pressure at all on my stomach is uncomfortable.  I also have bloating and gas.

Does anyone know if these are just symptoms of GERD or could they be side effects from the NExium?  I would rather have the occasional heartburn than the stomach problems and headaches!

Any adivce would be appreciated!

Thanks!
Lisa

I was on nexium for about 4 months when I was diagnosed with a stomach ulcer. I had the same exact problem. It was absolutely horrible. You should have your doctor switch you medicine. I found that the only one that didn't make me feel that way was protonix. I said I would rather have a stomach ulcer than ever go on nexium again!

This is an old thread that I am bringing up to ask if there is any newer info. on this subject.  I have had a terrible time with dizziness, confusion, joint pain, fatigue.  I am now very iron deficient and gained 30+ pounds since on Nexium.  Are these side effects possibly from Nexium?  My physician said I was way off the mark....that she has never seen this in 30+ years of practice.  Well, I have seen posts on this old thread that tells me otherwise.

If I eat iron rich foods will this help my anemia?  Is the weight gain related or was it because I could eat anything so I did???

So...updates anyone???  PLEASE!!

I stopped cold turkey 6 days ago.....not too bad days 1-5 but today has been bad.  Can't believe I started this mess because of relatively mild heart burn 7 years ago !!!!  Obviously my primary doc. is of no help on this one !!

Thanks for any responses !!!!

I'd ask for B12 shots. They help your anemia.
Nexium or any PPI prevents the absortion of certain vitamins and minerals.
The weight gain is probably just your doings. :)

Thanks for the response....I can't ask for B12 shots because my doc. said I just need to take an iron supplement....she said Nexium has nothing to do with it.......but everything I read says otherwise......

For me, Nexium was a nightmare.  For some reason it has the highest rate of side effects.  Go to www.askapatient.com for more info.

Pantoprazole was much more mild on the side effects. Nexium was brutal, but it is effective.

I have tried all other ppi drugs and they all stopped working for me untill Nexium. It is the only one that works for me and I dont have any side effects at all from it that I can find. It is working great for me when all others have failed. Just thought I would add that too this.
