Those who have gotten an EGD when did you decide it was time to get one? I been having reflux symptoms for a year now. Lpr is what were thinking it is. At times I can be ok for couple weeks but then I will get the throat tightness/globus feeling occasionally and on rare occasions stomach/pelvic pain that lasts about a week or two. The pain travels right upper quadrant to lower pelvic area ..it varies. Not sure what to make of it but I can also get headaches on right temple and pain/discomfort at the joint of my jaw on right side as well. Since the stomach discomfort from a flare up last week I doubled up on omeperazole so not sure if the omeperazole is what's contributing to the jaw and headache feelings or if its from reflux itself. I started to lower the dosage today but trying to get more advice if doing an EGD would really be worth it. Docs are leaving it up to me really did a barium swallow and that came back fine and I just hit a year with these symptoms so just don't know. My symptoms are pretty mild at times but more so annoying and makes me feel blah to the poi t where my energy is decreased. Would love to just be healed.

I didn't have one until my gastro doctor decided it was necessary, and my symptoms were unbearable. We aren't medical professionals on this Forum, but the headaches and jaw joint pain may be a separate issue. People have the tendency to blame everything on reflux, and don't consider things like gallbladder issues. Stress/anxiety can cause reflux flareups, can make your symptoms worse, as well as causing irritation to the stomach lining and esophagus. Did the doctor tell you to double-up on your PPI, or was that your decision? Are you following a strict GERD-diet and keeping a food diary to try and pinpoint your trigger foods? Have you given up alcohol, smoking, spicy foods, carbonated beverages as well chocolate and coffee? Take a look at a GERD diet, you will be surprised at the amount of foods that cause reflux.

Good luck with your decision,

Hi Sharon

Do you believe there is scientific evidence stress and anxiety creates/contributes to gastric ulcers.

I am 7 months from an NF due to HH and Gerd, I had reasonable run, had some swallowing issues around month 4, which was bazaar given I was ok till then, my issue a bit of food would get stuck and cause feeling of reflux. So had dilation before Xmas and found benign gastric ulcers, all else intact and no structural issues. Surgeon said give it a year.

The ulcers explains why I get heat and some tightness in my oesophagus after eating, I’m on nizac daily for 3 months. But I have noticed when I am very stressed it will flare up. I have also read these ulcers can take months to heal.

Also did you have sensation of occasional food getting stuck after eating in the first 12 mths.

Look forward to your thoughts.

John:

Again we aren't medical professionals but speak from past experience. In my own experience, stress/anxiety did play a part in my acid reflux flareups. This is something you can speak to your gastro doctor about. I don't have any experience with ulcers, I never suffered from them. I did not have episodes of food getting stuck, but I can tell you that you still have to really chew your food well after surgery. When you are starting to feel better, you sometimes forget to chew your food thoroughly, especially with meats. When you had your manometry test, did it show any swallowing dysfunction? I also never needed to have any dilations. Just remember you are still in reovery.

Thanks Sharon.

When I had the marshmallow test end of November last year, it was 5 mths from surgery, it showed a little bit of food getting stuck, surgeon said it will clear, it was normal, I need a few more months closer to 12 months.
But he agreed to help speed up healing by dilating but not too much, in Dec, so it doesn’t bring back reflux.
It was a blessing I did it because they discovered gastritis h pylori was negative, which explained why I was feeling dyspepsia and discomfort in the stomach and throat.
It has been bazaar because I can’t tell if it’s swallowing due to NF or due to gastritis (a common symptom) anyway I am on Somac and Carafate for 8 weeks, hopefully will do the job.

John:

So you didn't have a swallowing test prior to the Nissen, and the Hpylori was negative? Usually you have the manometry testing (swallowing function) prior to surgery and that establishes if you are candidate for the Nissen and whether you will have a full or partial procedure. When you had your EGD, how long after did you have the Nissen surgery. I'm asking because it just sounds odd that the ulcers showed up during your recovery.

Here's hoping that the Somac and Carafate give you some relief. I'm one of the few people that had no relief from Carafate

Hi Sharon

I had my EGD in Mar, and was advised to have a full wrap due to large HH and years of reflux. I also had some other nuclear tests. I put it off till June. When I had it he said he was very happy all went well and all clear. I followed puréed food for 4 weeks and then soft foods.

At 12 weeks that’s when it started feelings of dyspepsia and sensation of food getting stuck on and off. When I spoke to him on Oct he said it’s normal some people heal slower, but let’s do a swallow test which showed some food getting and he can do a dilation to relieve me of some of the discomfort and speed process, and give it 12 months.

I did the dilation in Dec and that’s when he discovered gastritis, how long did I have it unknown, but it certainly has played havoc with my oesophagus and digestive system. I believe it months before. He should have given me Carafate from Dec rather than now it would have healed my ulcers.

The weirds thing, is that throughout my 7 months I have had normal foods hamburgers, baked chicken, pizza, and managed well with swallowing and digesting, that’s why I feel it’s months of gastritis not treated early that has caught up and possibly caused this.
The other interesting thing is that since surgery I have never had any any reflux, heartburn when I sleep, it’s only during the day that I have the issues described above when eating., but even that is not always same, some days ok some days not.

Why did you take Carafate if you had no ulcers?

Thanks J

I took it for severe gastritis, caused by an h. Pylori infection. I took Clarithromycin: 500 mg twice per day and
Amoxicillin: 1,000 mg twice per day for 14 days, as well as my PPI. The antibiotic dosage was rough on the stomach. It usually takes a good two weeks for the gastritis symptoms to start to subside. Just make sure that you aren't taking any NSAIDs, such as Advil, they are terrible on your stomach.

I understand, when you said earlier you had no encounters with ulcers I was confused because gastritis is basically stomach ulcers.

So you would have had similar symptoms inflamed throat, stomach heat, burning, loss of appetite…etc he didn’t give me antibiotics because biopsies showed negative.

Thanks for sharing, appreciated.

Needs time to heal, the gastritis threw me off my recovery.
