I'm only 15 years old and I know how rare it is for a person of my age to have a heart attack. However yesterday I drank two Starbucks espresso double shots and two diet cokes, however they were spread out throughout the day. Later at around 7:20 I felt very lightheaded and started getting heart palpiations. I was sitting at the dinner table and all of a sudden became really nervous and felt a discomfort in my chest. I also had problems seeing clearly, I mean I could see and read, but it felt as though someone put a filter over my eyes. So my father took me to the emergency room, and they took my blood pressure and heart rate, it was a little high for me. Later as the docter came in, she took my blood pressure and it was completely fine. However my face was rather flushed and warm, I looked rather pink. Every now and then as I was sitting in the room, I felt my heart rate go up, and sometimes I would feel a heavy pulse in my neck or in my chest, my fingers were colder than usual. My shoulders also hurt. They let me out of the hospital saying I had a panic attack and too much caffeine. I went to bed and as I was lying down I felt another pain in my chest. The docter had given me maalox but I am not sure if it was heartburn. Right now I am feeling pressure and a cold sensation in my chest and whenever I exert energy it hurts. Today I took maalox and it did not really help. So I am wondering should this be something I should worry about? Could I possibly be having serious heart problems at age 15? I am in good shape, I am a runner and I eat pretty well, I do not smoke or drink. What is going on with me?

I'm really sorry you are going through something so scary! I've had panic attacks before and they are not pleasant. In fact, they are horrible and can feel as if you are dying or having a heart attack. It can indeed make you feel very nervous, lightheaded, even breathless. It is not unusual to have palpitations and/or chest pains with a panic attack. You can feel warm and flushed and at the same time your fingers will be ice-cold. That is kind of a clue that your parasympathetic nervous system is riled up according to the counselor who taught me biofeedback.

You were so right to go to the ER. Never take a chance with your heart. No matter how young you are! I'm glad your dad was so supportive and took it seriously and took you in.

Too much caffeine can trigger palpitations and a racing heart which can then easily lead to a panic attack because you don't know what your heart is doing. I stay away from caffeine these days because I hate to irritate the palpitation I already have and I don't want to send my heart into a tachy episode if I can help it. I know now that neither one is going to kill me but I find them unpleasant.

Good Luck and I hope you are feeling better today!

Ok so this is the person who wrote this forum, me Felicity. I have another problem, my doctor does not believe me what should I do? I mean I really dont think it was a heart attack (knock on wood) but the problem is I still have sudden thumps in my chest or in my neck. It scares me. It doesnt hurt. But however I want an EKG and my doctor flipping wont GIVE Me one!!! I really think I need to go see someone again to check this out because during my panic attack, I could've pulled a muscle or something in my chest. Who knows ? = / Well thanks again! KEEP me posted!
