I posted before that I have Crohn’s. Also, this year, I have been having GERD and gastritis for 25 years. I have been taking Nexium 40 mg twice per week since 2007. Since last week, I started to lose my voice and it is recurring. The ENT doctor after examination said I have severe inflammation due to severe GERD. My GI mentioned that this is because of a medicine most probably the new med for Crohn’s, Rinvoq or stress as I’m worried that I might fail the third treatment in less than a year. I don’t want to be repeating my previous post. I’m just worried that this voice loss is recurrent. Throughout the last 25 years, my endoscopies showed either grade A or B LA GERD. Now, that I’m having this severe inflammation what should I ask for? To have an upper endoscopy or what else? I refused before to have an impedance 24 hr test and freaked out from the idea of having a catheter inserted in my nose and down to my esophagus. Is this necessary at this stage? My GI didn’t mention any tests but I’m really worried of this recurring voice loss. I’m thinking of asking him to perform a test but I don’t know what.

Minnie, you said your gi has recommended Maalox 3 times a day, this was just a few days ago. I would give the Maalox a good trial before doing anything else. Searching on Dr. Google will drive your anxiety even higher.

Take care.

Hi Susie
Well, correct me if I’m mistaken and out of experience, Maalox is not as effective and efficient as PPIs, for example are. I don’t consider it to be a medicine that can treat an illness. It’s just there to soothe heartburn and indigestion. On the box is written it is for symptomatic treatment. I didn’t consult Dr. Google 😂 It is my general knowledge that I should not move to a higher grade whether C or Barrett’s. I’ve read that 12.4% of patients who take Rinvoq get GERD. So, it has been documented. Given that I do already have GERD, I don’t want it to deteriorate. If I can do anything to stop my GERD from getting worse, I would definitely do it. Maybe there are new meds that are more effective in controlling hyperacidity. Btw, I’ve always had NERD and didn’t have this heartburn.

I didn't say the Maalox was to replace your PPI, you said the dr added it. Maalox can help with irritation to an extent. it's up to you to decide if you want to try it or not. If you are not satisfied with what your gi is telling you, make an appt & be seen.
