Hi folks:
I just found the forum and I'm really glad to have so other people to talk to about this.
I was wondering if anyone out there in GERD-land has had, or is having, a similar experience.
I was diagnosed with GERD about 10 years ago and put on Prilosec, 1 pill (20mg) a day.
about two years ago my symptoms started getting worse from time to time, so I
would take a half or a full pill extra later in the day (by this time Prilosec was available
over the counter). By about a year ago I was taking two pills daily.
Then three months or so ago things got much worse, and sometimes I was gobbling
Prilosec -- four or five pills on the really bad days.  Finally, last week, it was like
my stomach blew up or blew out -- the Prilosec just stopped working altogether.
None of the other over-the-counter meds make much of a dent in the pain either.
My stomach is also now very bloated for some reason, like a balloon, and the
indigestion pain is constant.  I saw my doctor today but all I got was a referral
to a gastroenterologist, and I'll have to wait a couple of weeks for that appointment.
Has anyone experienced anything like this, and do you have any advice?
Many thanks...

Thanks for the greeting and the resource, Jennifer. My doctor didn't have anything
to say re: Prilosec loosing effectiveness, so I'll have to wait to
speak to the gastroenterologist.

I was a little worried about me when I read your post bec. you said you started at 1 pill a day for Prilosec....well my doc started me on it 20 mg twice a day....maybe I need to reduce the dosage.

I have been on prilosec for almost 5 yrs and mine has seemed to stop working too. I was having terrible pains in my stomach and would drink pepto or take rolaids to try and get relief but nothing worked. I called the doc and he gave me a sample of nexium 40 mg to try. It worked but my insurance won't cover the prescript. I now have a call in to try and get them to take me to twice a day on the 20 mg since my insurance won't cover 40 mg of that either.
This all started happening after I was diagnosed with uncerative proctitis a month ago. Could all of this be connected? I also have the bloating feeling when I hurt too.

It's years after those posts, but I've been taking Prilosec OTC for yearsdue to GERD and Barret's Esophagus, at my doctor's instructions, and in the past months it has ben less effective. I have been taking several Rollaids to reduce the symptoms, but I don't know why the Prilosec isn't working very well anymore.
