I am newly diagnosed with GERD secondary to allergy flare ups. I had a cold/flu 1 month ago and have been sick since. In the past week, I have developed this barking, sometimes productive cough with pressure and burning in my chest. I am tryng to take OTC cough suppressants. Not working well. Was put on a PPI yesterday. It sounds so bad like I am going to blow up my lungs, people are staring at me. I feel overwhelmed with all this new information. eyesDoes anyone have experience with the cough?

I am new to this forum, signed up today.  BUT, I have had the acid reflux for years.  Mine got so bad that I aspirated into my lungs. It took one visit to a lung spec. for him to diagnois this. It took over a year to get my lungs well enought for them to do surgery (Nissan Wrap) on my esph.  NOTE: I am a bad typer sometime, so please disregard my typos.)  Anyway, the surgery was a success, but it took another 2-3 years for my lungs to heal from the hydrochorlide (sp) acid burns in them.  My lungs are in really great shape at the moment.
I also have many other medical conditions at teh present.  By having to take steroids for over 4-5 years it has ruined my teeth, I have Addison Disease, COPD, osteoarthritis, GERD, Cos Chrondritis (sp)., osterporisis, and stress fractures.  I have had both of my knees replaced. One 5 years ago and the other this past Nov.  They have went very well. PT is the secret to healing from the replacement, both before and after the surgery.

I have actually fractured ribs by coughing, and by laying on the table to have an epidural. This is very painful whne it seems like all your bones and body parts hurt.  mad
I guess what helped heal my lungs has done the most damage to my body massive doses of steroids.  My teeth are breaking off, and I don't have dental insurance, so my smile is no longer a smile.

My present pain is my left foot and right hip. Now try to walk when oposite limbs hurt!  I look like "Festis on Gun Smoke."  After a trip to the ER on Firday, I was elated to find out I had not fractured my hip or foot. BUt he did tell my arthritis and bone spurs AGAIN.  I am using a walker at times in the house. I just want to find a way to quit hurting all the time.

Sorry, I wrote a book. But, back to your cough. I have alot of remedies from my lung spec. that can help with the cough. The best being garle liquid benadry. I get teh generic form at Walmart. You can either spit it out or swallow it. This helps with the coughing.  Good luck with you helath.  thanks to all who reads this and any information back I can get will be greatly appreciated.  Jbrat  :-)

Thank you. I hope that my experience helps you some. I know that GERD is terrible and I didn't believe the first pulmary doctor that told me my coughing was from acid reflux. I have a great pulmary doctor now and he has helped me so much. I even spent 2 months sleeping in the recliner to keep the acid from aspirating.
Good luck. J
