I know that a sore throat is a symptom of GERD but does anyone have burning in their mouth and on their lips?  Also, does your throat ever get so dry that it hurts?  I've had these symptoms on and off and I stopped taking Nexium about 3 to 4 weeks ago.  I had the burning in my mouth when I was taking the Nexium so it's not new.  I've been trying some home remedies and watching my diet but I didn't do so well over the Easter weekend!

Just wondered if anyone had felt these things and if you have any suggestions to help with it.

Thanks!

Hi LFA,
There is an actual syndrome called Burning Mouth Syndrome (BMS) which because its a syndrome indicates the causes can be many (dry mouth, candida (thrush), etc). You may want to do a google search which should give you more possible causes and see if you relate to any. I would bring this up to your doctor though because you possibly can have an underlying cause.
Take Care

Sorry to hear about you having Burning mouth. I have had it since 1991, been to Dentist, Drs. they have heard of it but don't know what to do. Since "91" I have developed Fibromyalgia & Gerd. Mind is in the throat at times also in mouth by gums, roof of mouth, on tongue & sometimes my nose burns inside too. I have a lady that I email too, she has it too. She & another friend heard about tasteandsmell & the Dr. there said GABA (gamma aminobutyric acid) is good. My friend isn't on anything by prescription so she is trying the GABA. I don't think I can be on it because I take Paxil & if I read right in another article I won't be able to take it. I am going to check with my Dr. on it.  My friend & I think stress might have something to do with it too. Anyway sorry, I can't help you to much but wanted to let you know your not alone. Also my throat gets real dry, I drink water alot or chew gum.

Take care, Deb

Well, I don't know if I actually have burning mouth syndrome.  It's possible but I thought it was related to GERD.  I did do a Google search and my symptoms aren't necessarily consistent.  I will keep an eye on it and see if it goes away.  Thanks for the input!

LFA....may I ask how old you are? Does your tongue look healthy?
I went through a spell of having a burning tongue and mouth. It eventually led to "hairy tongue". I guess that's an infection between swollen tastebuds. Who knew?? lol!
Several things you could try: Be sure you are getting enough B vitamins. Also take sublingual B12, at least 1,000 mcg every day.
Also...my daughter takes lysine tablets for her cancker sores, and I tried some, and it seemed to help with my burning mouth.

I am 39 years old. Yes, I think my tongue looks healthy. I was thinking of taking some B vitamins since I read it may be a deficiency in that area.
Thanks for the info.

I have been suffering from BMS for the past year. I am 52 and postmenopausal. My mother also suffered from this disorder only she called in "Hot Tongue." Mine was triggered through stress and once the switch is turned on, there is no medical treatment out there to turn it off. I have been self medicating with Lipoic Acid and Calcium Magnesium with some success. However, by accident I found I could get considerable relief by taking a half Zimovane (prescription sleeping pill) at lunch time, I have virtually no pain in the evening. This is a very real and dibilating syndrome. It seems a lot of Doctors don't even know what you are talking about when approached with the name "Burning Mouth Syndrome." I have found the internet a great source of information while also providing some comfort knowing there are others out there who know how I feel.

Hi angierose
I'm sorry to hear that you have this syndrome. I'm still not sure that that's what I have. It really hasn't bothered me too much in the last few days. I started taking a B-Complex with C vitamin and maybe that's helping. It just seems natural that if I have GERD that burns my throat, why wouldn't it travel up into my mouth too? Or maybe the two go hand-in-hand in some people. Anyway, maybe the vitamin is helping it. Thanks for your suggestions!

I am also a new member, and came upon this forum by accident, but I'm thrilled to see my condition here.  I have had the burning in my mouth, lips and throat since the first of this year. And yes, sometimes the inside of my nose, and my eyes burn also.  Dr diagnosed oral thrush, caused by candida overgrowth.  He put me on Nystatin for 2 months so far.  I have been taking oregano oil, garlic, caprylic acid, b-complex, b-12, among all of my other vitamins.  I have eliminated sugar and sweeteners, except stevia.  I have had no caffiene, fruit or  anything with yeast for 4 weeks. It just doesn't seem to make any difference, and I'm getting tired of this diet, if it's not going to help.  I also have scalp itch, without any signs of flaking, a toenail fungus, and mysterious skin rashes on my abdomen and back, that come and go.   I would dearly love to know what's going on with me, but the dr doesn't seem to have much input.  He did a blood allergy test, and it only showed tomatoes. Anyone else have those symptoms?  Thanks for any ideas.

I have had dry mouth and acid burning taste in mouth for a long time. I use to lose my voice from it. I started taking nexium 2x a day and it abated. Then they switched me to one time a day and it was still ok. Now I have it back. It is horrible and causes me to eat to get another taste in my mouth and has also caused me to just want to sleep my life away. There is no pain in my sleep.
Then I saw doc and he gave me an endoscope without a sedative. This was because I live alone and had nobody to drive me. It was terrible and hurt a lot. He said my esphagus (spelling?) was very inflamed. You may ask why I waited to see the doc.  I am afraid they are going to make my situation worse. It seems that you can never get it right with them and they always blame me for my illnesses, ie, you are fat, you don't exercise enough, you drink coffee, blah, blah, blah.

I sure hope I can be helped and not hurt. Best of luck to all of you.

Oh Joan........that's awful that they did the endoscopy without anesthesia!!  That's horrible.  Couldn't they have let you rest there for awhile, until you were awake?  Could you have taken a cab?  I just can't believe they did that.

I try natural yoghurt.  Eating it but also letting it rest in my mouth and on my tongue for a while.  It seems to help.  Also drinking lots of cold water or holding an ice cube there.

Thanks, Sea 2, for the idea...I eat natural yogurt every day, and it probably has helped some. A friend told me to get prescription antifungal mouthwash, and the burning will go away. I really hope so!Anyone tried that?

Hi Cathy A: I tried that the first time (2 years ago) and they wouldn't let me leave in a cab. It was not so bad but this last time it was MURDER. Awful pain. The pharmacist said I had a hiatal hernia but the doc called and told me it was a bleeding ulcer. I am taking this "sucralfate" script. I hope it will get better soon. I am very tired from the pain and also gave up coffee.
good luck to all
