Hi guys,

Well I have been taking only 1/2 a 20mg PPI daily for 2 months or more now. I can't believe how good I feel! I now know that a lot of my symptoms were side effects from the strength of the tablets.

I tried to cut back to a 1/4 of a tablet but this was a bit too ambitious, so I went back to 1/2. I am going to attempt this again tomorrow.

My diet these days is simply low-fat. I am fine with most things.  I have eaten chocolate, raw onions and apples(1st time since last summer!) and have drank regular tea and coffee with no symptoms whatsoever.

It seems that 10mg is right for me at present and I believe it is worth thinking about whether less is more, if you know what I mean? Strong PPI's can block acid to an extent that food isn't digested properly and you get a different type of indigestion.(I certainly did).

Best wishes

   HI
so pleased to see that you are doing ok on the reduced dose, its just such a horrible disease which i think is made worse by the fact that if you are a worrier you think that it is something much worse that is wrong with you, well i do anyway, i am dreading my scope, not becuase im scared of the procedure just scared of what they will find.
keep smiling
Nell

It's great you're doing better! A lot of people ("normal" people) take feeling well for granted and can't understand how we want to shout it from the rooftops :-) I wish you continued success and good health.

Hi meowpuss,

I am following your lead and trying to slowly, slowly decrease my dosage. I was given a prescription for 30mg lansoprazole. I took the full dose for two weeks, then started pouring some granules out to about 20-25mg, and for the past week I have been taking about 15mg a day. I am feeling quite good at 15mg, and will be seeing the doctor this week.

I think I will try 15mg for another 2-3 weeks and then TRY to make the switch to H2 blockers. While they may not be as effective as PPIs, I think they may be slightly easier on the old system.

I am really glad you have stablised!

That's excellent Alex!

It seems silly to be taking more than necessary doesn't it?
Initially I became reliant upon the meds and was scared to cut back, but these days I feel stronger and in control of my own body for a change.

Good luck and keep us posted.

I switched from nexium to zantac and feel so much better in an overall way...however the reflux control is not as great. I wish someone knew what to do to get rid of this stuff...not just treat the symptoms. I don't eat the obvious bad foods, eat a low carb diet, take probiotics, a good multi vitamin, stay off meds as much as possible, try to walk, keep my stress level low, sleep plenty, and still I wake up and throw up in my mouth after a good night's sleep. What is up with that?

I will say that if I get too much on my mind about stressful stuff, the burping becomes really bad...so I know that is a stress factor...but just sitting here typing now I am under zero stress but I can feel the pressure in my chest and the ever so slight burning.

Hearty,I know it is so frustrating at times isn't it? You think that you are doing everything possible to help yourself, but still the reflux takes over!

Hi,

Just an update to say over the last week I have been taking 1/4 tablet and I have been feeling great. Today, I haven't taken a tablet at all. I feel good so far and fingers crossed, I can stop the PPI's altogether.

Best wishes to everyone, the support here is fantastic. cool

Again...we are leading parallel GERD lives, meowpuss. I saw the doctor this week and it turns out I am doing quite well, and that I tested negative for H. pylori.

My doctor said that she condones self-medication, so I have steadily been decreasing my dosage. I have been taking about 10mg for the past 4 days and feel near perfect.

I want to get off the meds asap, but I am going to Eastern Europe in a few weeks, so I don't want a relapse whilst abroad.

Keep the updates coming!
