What do you do if the medication your doctor suggests doesnt work?
What are  most of you taking?
Are we expected to live with heartburn even if it is better than severe heartburn???
I have had it 24/7 for the last two weeks.  Unfortunately I don't get scope done until 5/22 so I do not if it is anything more serious than acid reflux.  BUT if it is just acid reflux what do I do if my doctor says my medication should be sufficient?  That is what he did today when i went to the ER because my regular Doctor said there was no other suggestions he could give me and the gastro guy told the ER Doc that what I was taking ...nexium should be sufficient.  So I was sent home with some ambien? HA HA does that make sense?????  Sigh........ mad

Thanks for replying.  I cannot imagine having to go through this day in and day out for four years let alone a week!  I've had the relux before when I was pregnant with my children.  My ENT prescribed it to me because I would get it once or twice a week and he said that sleep apnea can contribute to acid reflux.  So, took nexium and as I said no problem.
This daily irritation/pain is enough to make you crazy.  I already suffer from a chronic disease/pain (although very happy to say it has been virtually pain free now for almost 2 months! tongue ) so to have this on top of it will probably cause me to head for the nearest looney bin!
I'm 42, and overweight, I will be working on taking this weight off like a vengence to see if that  brings relief as well.  Up to now it has not been a problem but apparently this ol' body is saying HELP!!
I hope that whatever surgery you decide will be helpful to you.  My brother in law had some type of surgery as well for gerd and does much better now.  He has occasional flare ups but not like he used to.

At one time I was taking Nexium 3 X's a day, Protonix 2 X's a day, reglan 4 X's a day, and sleeping on a slide (at least it felt like that).
My ENT was a specialist in this area and followed my treatment the closest.  It was affecting my larynx and required surgery twice to remove cysts, scar tissue resulting from acid reflux.
As with any illness...Don't hesitate to seek second opinion.  There is probably a doc who specializes in this field in your area or on available provider list. Ask your local medical society, and just talk to other people.  Someone will know who it is.
Wish you luck!  It is very upsetting to feel your symptoms are not being taken seriously.

Hi Sassy:

I would take a million meds at this point if it brought prolonged relief. I guess what I will do at this point is go in for the scope on the 22nd and see what he comes up with. I think I will also insist on my intern checking my gallbladder as I hear that can be a culprit as well.

I definately will not let this go. Sometimes it is about finding the right doctor.

Thanks for the input!

It is very frustrating. The thing that bothers me the most is to feel like you have finally got a handle on it...meaning minimal pain 100% of the time. And then, wham, a major flare up. Yesterday, I started having really bad pain in my lower right side. I contribute it to gas since it went away. Well, I went to be feeling fine and woke up with the heartburn, chest pain, etc...just as bad as before I started the nexium. So the gas and heartburn are related?

I don't have gas issues thank God, but I have read from the many sites I've visited lately that gas and heartburn typically go hand in hand.

Hi, everybody, I have had reflux since 2002 and started taking drugs right away. They were working but I had a chemical taste in mouth 24/7. Went to see the doc and he gave me a scope without sedative. It was horrible and I was very inflamed.
The reason why I went without a sedative is that I did not have a ride home and the hospital would not allow me to take the sedative without a ride. Ever since the scope, I am in pain with a sore sore throat but hope to be better in the next week or so. At least I can sleep now.
Yes Hearty.  the gas and heartburn are related as far as I can figure out.
Will see the doc on Monday and hope for some answers. You can't let GERD go because it can lead to serious problems.
Good luck to all my suffering cyber pals!
