I keep feeling guilty about eating foods such as brownies, bacon, BBQ Ribs...etc, and my condition isn't getting any better, but I was wondering, has anyone been able to relieve all of their symptoms through dieting?  Has anyone used a combination of diet and medication to actually be happy with their situation?  If I could go 1 month without a sore throat I think I'd be much more happy than I am now...

I have a freind who has been able to quit her PPIs after a year, and she's following an alkaline diet successfully. I have a strict diet and this helps me a lot. It has definitely allowed my gut to heal, and taught me more self-control. Diet is very, very important in the management of a chronic condition such as GERD, but it is depressing to follow a diet as strict as ours, I'll grant you that. Hang in there!

I'm doing great too. I've been off the PPIs over 3 months. I'm doing the same as you, Tofumaven.

Some drugs also cause more harm than good.

If that were true, there would be little need for self-help forums such as this one.  Check out the studies sometime on doctor-induced illness.

VIEW IMAGEVIEW IMAGEHi All,  this is my first post.  I also have Gerd and acid reflux.  I watch my diet closely.  First thing I do each day is don't over eat, don't eat spicpey foods or fatty foods.  All those things will create an episode all day and I will be so uncomfortable no pill will help.  I take 3 pills for my stomach and still I have troubles but not so bad.  Most days are good.  I say talk to your doctor about your diet before you make any changes.  Maybe you need to change your meds.
Good luck.  dmcdoll

Hi, I agree with the moderator but on the other hand I also agree with the person who was talking about doctor-induced health problems and diseases.

It seems almost no one knows that you can take the ppi at night. It has a 24 hour suspension.  The main thing about dieting is NOT TO EAT A LOT BEFORE GOING TO SLEEP.

You must avoid greasy and spicy foods.  Fruit and veggies are great as well as whole grains and water.  Plain water is the best thing to drink and it is free! Skim milk is also ok.

It is really smart to be trim and not overindulge in cigs, alcoholic drinks, etc. Caffeine is also suspect...which for me is a drag.  My gerd sins are overweight and caffeine (coffee).

You will know what you can handle.  I can not drink orange juice or eat spagetti sauce (my homemade is ok).  I love brownies and occasionally indulge!

Take care.         eyes
