I just found out i have gerd and also have very bad breath...does anyone else experience this?  I have having a endoscopy done as well as a 24 hour ph test.  The reflux is horribe but the bad breath is worse...its makes social situations horrible.  I have had the bad breath for a few years and couldnt figure out what was causing it, i would brush my teeth 100 times and it would still be there.  O was now just diagnosed with gerd/acid reflux and the nexium did not work.  Please if anyone has experience with this please help thanks.

I used to get bad breath all the time, nowdays, I only get it if my acidity is really bad.

Brushing your teeth works, but you do not want to over do it. If you brush your teeth too much it dries your mouth. so the acid smell which causes bad breath gets even worse with dry mouth. First off you must get the acid under control, once you get that under control, some of the bad breath will go away. Have something to munch on when you have bad breath. Part of it is because acid is seething back in your mouth, so coat your stomach with something.

Experimenting with toothpaste is a key element. In my experience Crest and Ultragel does not work. Colgate with baking soda is good. Strong cheap pepsodent will dry your mouth too much. The best toothpaste is Arm and Hammer Peroxicare with baking soda. It really works. Plus try some orajel, moisturize your tongue.

Hope this works.

Hi Tinkerbell

I have not experienced the bad breath but was wondering if you have spoken to your dentist about it. I saw an ad recently from Dr. Dorfman from that show Extreme Makeover advertising soemthing on TV for bad breath. Unfortunately I don't remember the name of the product.

I have GERD and my wife recently said she'd notice a marked downturn in my breath.  I contacted my GI specialist and he said there is no connection between GERD and bad breath - that the problem must lie elsewhere.  Recommended brushing my tongue when I brush my teeth, and using a mouthwash at night.
