Ok, I have no idea if this is hereditary, but my sister and father have GERD. I have noticed for a few years (I'm 27) that I get short of breath for no reason. I went on a very healthy diet and am no longer obese and noticed less problems, so I assumed it was my weight. Well, lately I have noticed now that when I am not following my healthy lifestyle (go crazy at a restaurant, go on vacation), I get shortness of breath. The spells follow eating usually and pretty much just involve me never feeling like I can catch my breath. I went to a doctor and all my bloodwork and checkup came back perfectly fine. He told me to take OTC prilosec and if it didn't work then I just had "anxiety and stress." I haven't been able to breathe good all day today just because I am to a breaking point...I am sick and tired of feeling this way (haven't been feeling well since a family vacation a few weeks ago when it really flared up). I have also been waking up "in a fog" and wanting to sleep later than normal (I wake up at 5 to fix breakfast for my husband and then again at 7 to fix breakfast and start the day for my son). I will admit I have had a lot of stress lately (miscarriage, father died, brother getting greedy since my father died), but I've been through worse and I just have a gut feeling it's not an anxiety issue. I even called our insurance's mental health line and the minute I said "shortness of breath" she said I needed to see a shrink for anxiety even though I don't know why drinking a diet soda or eating too much or too rich of foods would give me a panic attack. Any ideas? I am REALLY needing some relief. I would appreciate any direction.

By the way, the only other stomach problem I have noticed is a nauseated hollow kind of feeling in the morning (like I need to get something on my stomach ASAP)

Thanks in advance for reading! -Mary

In my opinion,, and i am not a dr this is just an opinion so always check with a dr.... it really does sound like anxiety/panic.. GERD is more of... stomach issues,,, heartburn,, acid in mouth/throat. Being short of breath can be a sign of many things.. maybe to put your mind at ease you should get a second opinion,, I know speaking for myself however, if i have too much caffeine, eat too much get under alot of stress things like that my anxiety kicks in. From the sounds of it you have been under a huge amount of stress. Anyhoo like i said, this is just my opinion based on personal experience as i have GERD and anxiety,, hope you are able to get answers soon, and i am sure others will respond soon....Take Care
