In October I was perscribed prilosec due to  GERD. I was on it for a month and went off of it because I felt better. I started experiencing the problem again around two weeks ago and started it up again. about 10 days ago I started having problems swallowing. I read some where that this could be a rare side effect of some PPI's. Has anyone heard of this.

I also notice that when I get home and have glass of wine it seems to relax me and it is easier to swallow. Could this be a mental thing as well. I am constantly thinking about the food going down my throat when I eat.

I guess I am just SCARED and confused. I see the doc a week from Monday...

Hi Marsha

It does sound as if anxiety could be playing a part in your symptoms, if i sit and get really worked up about my symptoms and start to think that i have something really serious wrong with me then things become so much worse and i start to focus on my swallowing and everything tenses up and then i imagine all the food sticking in my throat. Its all due to muscle tension. I know its not what we should do but try and read something or watch the tv or look online and eat at the same time and im sure that when you are not focusing all your attention on it things will be easier.
Take care

Oh Thank you Nell

I am glad to know there is someone like me out there (not that I wish this on anyone). I am so tired of the anxiety from this. I get so scared I have cancer or something. I am about to eat a salad and am freaking out about it. Food is suppose to be something that you should be able to enjoy not dread.

Also,

Do you think hydration could cause swallowing problems. I don't drink enough water and always wake up in the morning thirsty and with a dry throat. I don't know just a thought.

Thanks again
Marsha
