Someone out there please help me. Some foods I can eat with no problem and other things seem like they are sliding down my throat. Tonight my husband picked up my favorite from a deli that has the best pastrami in the world. I have had ther pastrami since I was a little girl I am now 41. I started eating a sandwich and it just slid down my throat like a snail. After half a sandwich I could not finish and ran upstair and puked. I am so scared its cancer or something. I have an appt. on Monday for a physical and am almost too scared to mention this. I am the worlds biggest hypchrondiac and my husband probably is thinking right now I belong in a mental hospital. Someone outhere please tell me they have gone thru the same thing and had it not be anything serious.

Thanks for listening
Marsha

Thanks for replying Jennifer

Yes it just came out of blue a couple of weeks ago. Last October I started to get the food thing of being stuck so the doctor gave me perscription prilosec. After a month I was fine and quit taking the meds. Around the first of June I started to get a couple of episodes of GERD so I started back up on the meds. The swallowing thing came up a week after being on the meds. Go figure that.....

skooby > It is probably a hiatus hernia.
I get that when i have drunk a lot of coffee / tea and have a meal after that.
It makes me want to throw up.

If you are getting endoscopy, it will reveal alot of things.

Thanks for your replys I am feeling better.

Jennifer I ate the cracker this morning and I could feel it go down. I have read other posts from people in the same situation and they have said it has taken 5 to 10 minutes to go down so I am relieved to know that there are others out there. Someone else mentioned they have had to have their esophagus stretched several times because of scar tissue so who knows. I will ask the doc on Monday for a referal to gastro. I have kaiser and its alot of beaucrocsy (spelling) to see a specialist.

Thanks again

Hi, skooby...sorry you have this problem. Hope your exam works out ok. You are better off having very small meals now since you seem to have this problem with reflux. I often have milk for one meal or half a bananna and watered down apple juice. Take care and let us know how you're doing. eyes

Thanks Jen and everyone who has replied to my post

Today I am feeling better....Last night I got real scared to eat and since my hubby bought the pastrami on Friday he wanted to have another sandwich. I told him I was not going to eat unless we went out for Mexican food (soft). Well Anyways I was able to eat it and was ok...My problem is when eating and feeling it go down I start panicing thinking for sure I am a goner (like I said worlds greatest hypochrondiac). Well anyways as long as its soft I can eat it with no problem.

I will let you know tomorrow what happens after the doc appt. My husband is even going wtih me to keep me calm because of my stupid panic attacks.

No illness is stupid. The doctors are working hard to find out the mysteries of the mind/body connection. I am glad you were able to eat. Take care and let us know what happens, ok?

Can you go on liquids for a while? That Ensure stuff is okay tasting. I understand completely what you mean.Food to me now is an enemy. And yes,you can go in for your Endoscopy and they will stretch the opening to make it a little more comfortable for you. I get that done about every 6 months, because of the scarring in my throat and esophagus. I do have the hiatal hernia, too. It causes pain in the chest area.I thought I had heart disease at first.  Best wishes to you.Ask for some Xanax if your anxiety becomes too much for you to handle.    Scrappyjrt

Hi Scrappy

Thanks for your reply. I doubled up on the Prilosec and it has made a difference. Do you have any other problems besides the hernia. I am hoping that all I have is a hernia. My 51 year old sis was diagnosed with Barretts a couple of months ago and I am obsessing about that. She does though have a history of alcahol, smoking and drugs.

Thanks again
Marsha
