I just returned from a retreat center in the eastern part of Washington State. Five people in my group of 13 got sick with gastroenteritis. This is a new strain of what used to be known as the "Norfolk virus" (now called norovirus) and it is very contagious. It used to be found only in cruise ships, but it you look at web page titled "noroblog" you will see it's happening anywhere a group of people gathers to eat. The symptoms are violent vomiting, diarrhea, and sometimes fever. They dissapear in about 24 hrs.
I am telling this story not to be alarmist, but to share what kept me virus-free during those scary four days (I was there on a business trip). I washed my hands several times a day, did not hug or touch anyone, ate well-washed and cooked food, did not share foods, and did not visit anyone else's room. Suffering from GERD, and not having much acid in my system with which to fight an infection, you can imagine how worried I was.

I am worried too. I do eat some plain non-fat yogurt every day (store brand) and hope it works for me. Read that there may be a black box warning on Nexium. The government has told them to stop advertising so much. There is a link between ppi's and community pneumonia. Trying to be brave. Thanks for your thread.

WHAT???? Oh man, thats just great about the PPIs. I have been on just about every one there is,right now we are back to the Protonix. I could not live without it!  What exactly is this virus? You get it from large amounts of people around? The PPIs have something to do with exposure to it? Sorry for all the questions,I have not heard about this yet.

Hi's on the net. There is a black box warning on nexium (omeprazole is the generic) regarding a "community pneumonia". The American Medical Society has reported a 27% increase in this.
I don't live in the West where they have that Norfolk virus but have been plenty sick in the East. Please don't bring the virus to us.  We are submerged in water!!!  We will have a fungal connection!!!
I want to stop taking the ppi and will consult with my GI doc soon.

Huggels, good vibrations and prayers always work, I hope eyes
