Does anyone here think that caffeinated sodas or fast food had a major impact with their GERD? Does anyone know the damage, if any, that coke can cause to your throat/esophagus?

According to the current theory, fast food that is greasy is not good for Gerd. I never eat it. When I was a teenager in Brooklyn, we had grilled muffins with butter and jam (choice of orange jam = marmalade (spelling??) or grape jelly. We also ate english muffins with same choice. You could choose to have your muffin plain. We always had coffee or iced coffee.

Caffeine is supposed to be really hard on your spinter muscle. Can't you find decaf soda in the grocery store? I am eating ice cream occasionally as a meal for my bleeding ulcer. Have to eat four meals a day but am losing weight.

To be a perfect GERD patient you must be slim and trim and not drink caffeinated beverages. Especially at night 3 or 4 hours before sleeping, you should only have necessary water and no food.

I am overweight but have reduced my caffeine level to 2 cups a day.

I think carbonated drinks screwed up my stomach big time. I used to have 2 diet cokes or doctor peppers a day (40 oz.) and sometimes on an empty stomach. I stopped drinking them cold turkey last February and think it had a positive effect on my reflux (along with other dietary changes). Now just the thought of a diet coke traveling down my esophagus gives me chills. I can imagine how it would burn. I stick to water mostly and sometimes a little ice tea.

thanks joan & niki:

i've been suffering terribly with daily  pain for over 5 years. i always worry that im bleeding inside. i am a pepsi/coke-aholic . my problem is that i am very thin and allergic to most foods. the more a food is cooked or frozen, the better my stomach is. fast food doesn't give me allergic reactions. all of the healthy fresh fruits and veggies are what im allergic to. and those are the foods i crave. i drink a lot of coke daily. i don't feel like i have many options with food, and thought coke was a fast way to at least keep weight on. im 103 pounds.

also, when you have gerd, does your stomach ever pulsate?

ive been so miserable with this for so long (with panic disorder, gerd, & allergies) --i think i'll probably become a "regular" on this message board. mad

Hi Mooney,
Can you drink energy shakes or a product like Ensure? They supply vitamins and also calories to keep your weight on. I'm worried the caffeine in the colas might be dehydrating you and making you lose some vitamins and minerals (as well as upsetting your tummy).

Soda is terrible on your stomach and intestine. I quit soda and I feel like a new person. Before, when I used to drink it ocassionally, I felt intense stomach pain (went twice to the ER). The cravings last a month, then you'll be free from bondage to the soda industry.

Make your own smoothies. Got a blender? I read this recipe on this forum and have made myself one of these almost daily. I'm thin, so this is a great way to get a few more pounds, PLUS - it's been like priming the pump; I feel like it's calmed my reflux.

2 Brazil nuts (in coffee grinder)
1/2 cup plain good quality yoghurt (no sugar)
1/2 cup milk
Berries
1/2 avocado
1 banana
some honey

Experiment. I don't like mine sickingly sweet, and I can control just how they taste. Especially now with the fresh fruits available. Good luck!

Hi, I used to be real thin. My Mom made a drink with whole milk and malt. You can put in banana, yogurt. Maybe you can have ice cream instead of yogurt. I've known people to gain weight on cherry pie and ice cream. How about oreo double stuff cookies!!!!! I am drolling now because I can't have that stuff, especially the double stuff. Take good care of yourself and drink water or herbal sun tea.
I love it. eyes eyes eyes

Dear Mooney...maybe soda is good in your case. Do you notice any bad side effects? What about tv dinners? Can you check out a large selection and maybe some are ok for you? Even if you have to throw away one item? Were you diagnosed by an MD with GERD? Maybe I'm asking too many questions. Water is good and rest when you can and eat what you're able to eat.
I have respiratory allergies and got shots from 1986 until 2004. I am a severely allergic person and also allergic to medications.

p.s. I hear my stomach making noise sometimes.

Joan:

My stomach is always noisy!LOL

I practically live on frozen foods like weight watcher foods, except I'm so thin i have to eat a lot of them. I notice that when I freeze the food and then cook it, i don't react as badly.

the soda thing is hard to quit. they need to put warning labels on soda cause IM AN ADDICT! I can't seem to quit. i can't imagine them being good for me either. but they make me feel good --until about an hour later!!!

i'm going to try to wean myself from the caffienated drinks and learn how to make italian sodas. :-)

I drink decaffeinated soda without problems. Am steering away from caffeine as much as possible. Without any caffeine I have no energy to even be awake, lol. Take care of yourself.

Italian sodas sound yummy.

Maybe we should form an allergic choir.  I wheeze sometimes and pant (of course!) plus my nose is a motor nose and is an independent instrument.

Too bad I can't attach my motor nose to my carburetor and get some added mileage. yeah
