i have been taking pariet for a little while and noticed that I started some hairloss.

Does anyone know if i can take another type of medication that doesn't have this side effect?

Nonstop,
I have been taking Nexium 40 mg. since 4/14, and I haven't noticed any hair loss from that med. I do have side effects from it, constipation, edema of the feet/legs.

But it has helped my GERD, but it surely took a long time. I still think I'm healing from the erosive esophagitis.

I get a rebate for my copay of $20 from the manufacturer of Nexium. My husband is on Protonix and he gets $20 copay on his med too and this is every month so far. The rebates are up to $30. I have never heard of Pariet before.

Feel better!

Hugs,
Faye

Faye,

I believe Pariet is also known as Aciphex.

At the rate I'm going I'll never get off the PPI. My endo keeps putting me on meds for cholesterol and then they stir up side effects or indigestion and my reflux gets worse.

So as soon as I am feeling better, I get put on yet another med by my endo and I'm worse again.

As far as hair loss goes my hair hasn't gotten thicker from the stress I went through early this year from my son's wedding.
I also know that Prozac can cause hair loss too and I've been on that since 1996. What can you do?

I think menopause causes a lot of us to get thinner hair. It's really hard to know what is from the medicine and what is from genetics or illnesses.

Hugs,
Faye

Back in Feb I got sick, could not control acid, was on protonix & prevacid . In march gallbladder was removed they then took me off prevacid, the protonix was not working so I finally convinced new DR to try acifex, it worked wonders my stomach had stopped hurting & I had no acid, but I was losing my hair by the hand fulls. I was noticing hair loss on protonix, but if I would have remained on acifex I would be bald. I am now on prevacid, stomach hurts ,under left rib, sometimes have acid, diarehha or constipation. I'm begining to wonder if I'd be better off bald.  any sugestions ??!!  My doc is sending me to dermotologist to figure out why so much hair loss, He's already said from ppi so has pharmacy. Does prevacid also cause this?

I had hair loss and my doc sent me to a dermatologist, in 1994, and the derm never figured out why my hair was getting thin. It ended up being menopause, I think, and was genetic. If I'm losing anymore hair from Nexium, I don't know it because I haven't had a thick head of hair in ages.

You still have Nexium and Prilosec to try for starters. If there are more PPI's I don't know about them. The only other thing would possibly be surgery if you can't deal with any of the PPI's. I just don't know where a person goes from not being able to take a PPI.

Gee, if you all are losing hair from what you are taking, I'm staying with Nexium. I used to be on Prilosec back in the early 90's for many years, but it never helped the pain I had from gastroparesis. I got that settled down by going to one meal a day and using Pepcid AC or Axid AR.

:-)  that sounds like a great idea, cutting back on eating.  i am pretty thin already, but i want off these balding meds. i did not get a response to if your hair grows back so i posted, i truly undrstand about the vicious cylce of meds, i went off my statins for cholesteral because of side effects, how awful. i have coronary artery disease and it is dangerous to have high cholesteral, but i am just not willing to suffer all the side effects, heck i felt 80 years old(not that there's anything wrong with that  ha ha) and just decided quality of life was better than quantity

I have been on 40mg Nexium since Dec 05. I switched doctors in June 06 and my new doc immediately noticed my thining hair. No doc has ever mentioned it before, although my grandma always had very thin hair on the top of her head and all the men in my family had the bozo the clown hair do. My new doc said that women who are genetically predisposed to thining hair will loose more hair from gerd medications. She told me to get rogaine for men, extra strength if I can find it and do what the directions say. I haven't tried it yet but I think I am going to try it. Has anyone tried it?

I'm sorry to hear that you all are also losing your hair, it's bad enough dealing with being sick. I know how you feel, it's like I'm sick all the time. I have went from being real active 38 yr. old to acting like an 80 yr old balding woman! I was wondering, when you lose hair have you noticed the root being white? I use to wash my hair every day but now try to go at least 2-3 days because it really falls out when I wash it. The men in my family go bald but I've never saw women in my family do this.

Hello,

Sorry to hear all the troubles with people losing hair. I have been taking Prevacid 30 mg a day and even upped my dosage to 60 mg a day for a few consecutive months. I never experienced this side affect. (Hair loss)

I was wondering if anyone has had hair loss well taking Prevacid? Please advise…I am extremely curious to know if this drug (Prevacid) causes hair loss.

Wishing everyone all the best.

Thanks,

Tommer

:-)  bhk, why do you feel like you are going on 80? because of the hair loss?  i hate it also, noone can answer if it will grow back i guess, probably noone has stayed off long enough, i am going to try and i will let everyone know.   yes, if you see that little white bump at the end of your hair, i jhave always been told that was the root and that it would not grow back if you see that, i hope that is wrong.  like you i only shampoo every third or 4th day also for same reason.are you in menopause? naturally we all have to take that into account, i wonder how many are losing hair who are not in menopause.  later,

Well I have been sick since feb. Had gallbladder sugery in march & I still don't feel well enough to go back to work. I have gerd & ibs or thats what they tell me. I am either c or have the d every day since then. My gyno says she thinks I'm peri menopausal, I think I could be alittle more advanced. Oh, during all of this I developed cysts on ovaries & in my breast. It's like I have no energy. My hair loss has been real bad I had very thick hair & now it is very thin. My step sister had breast cancer & had to have chemo. We joke around about her saving her wig for me but it is becoming a reality. Oh well, I guess there could be worse things.

Well, I surely don't think everyone will have hair loss. I haven't noticed any and I've been on the Nexium 40 mg. for almost 4 months.

I'm still having problems though, a lot of nights.

I'm just having constipation and edema in the feet/legs/hands, but that one thing is making me miserble. I feel like I'm going to explode. I wish I could get off this medicine.

I was thinking of trying the Protonix and seeing if that would help me get to the point of being able to get off the PPI's.

Dreamgirl, I have seen that bulb on the end of my hair and I hope it doesn't mean the hair won't grow back, but I've had a hair loss problem now since 1993 and believe it was mainly related to Premarin I was on. And since I stopped the Premarin in 1/1994, I haven't had my hair to grow back to the point it was prior to all of this.

I'm still thinking of going off the Nexium and trying the Protonix just to get some relief from the edema and constipation. But then I'd be very upset if I had hair loss worse than I do right now.

Gosh, maybe I'd be better off to stay with the Nexium? I have no idea what to do...

Hugs,

Faye

:-)  i cannot beleive you are unable to at least help the constipation, are you eating lots of fiber, i take a fiber pill(up to 4) daily and that helps.  if you take calcium sipplements that is a constipator also, but i have noticed the one with magnesium helps keep your bowels moving better.  you know, there is constipation and then there is CONSIPATION, i got so bad i could not have a movement, now that hurts, so i hope that is not what you are dealing with.

Does this answer my question...the lack of responses means that Prevacid does not cause hair loss? Thanks in advance for a response.

Tommer,
I will be switching from Nexium 40 mg. to Prevacid 30 mg. around 9/1, whenever I finish what Nexium I have now. My insurance won't cover Nexium anymore and my doc just gave me an Rx for Prevacid.

My hair is so thin, that I really can't tell if it is getting thinner or not. I have no idea when I'll be able to get off of the PPI's, so if hair loss is a side effect, then I guess I have to live with it. I've been living with it since 1993 anyway.

Hugs,
Faye

I know that when I was on prevacid I didnt have any hair loss.  Its just been since I have been on prilosec again that I am getting it.

The med isn't even helping my gastritis anymore at all.  I think its actually making it worse.  I just had my gallbladder out too and hoping that will help.

I just learned that prilosec is the cause of my hair loss and thinning hair. I started it in 1997 so now my Dr changed it to zantac.. Hoping it all grows back.. why it took so long to find out.. I am also using pantene expert age defy thickening treatment. Wow what a differance..
